Wildfires of note

There are 13 wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

EWF-031

• Wildfire EWF-031 is located 14 km Southeast of Edson, Minnow Lake Provincial Recreation Area has been overrun by the wildfire. It is still classified as out of control at 77,920 hectares.
• Alberta Wildfire is responding with two dozer groups, two intermediate and one medium helicopter. One ignition helicopter and airtanker support.

WCU-001 and WCU-002 

• These wildfires are located in the Evansburg/Entwistle/Wildwood/Hansonville area.
• These wildfires are classified as out of control at 8586ha (WCU001) & 2,400 ha (WCU002).
• Wildfire WCU-002 is approximately 7 km northwest of Evansburg on both sides of Highway 22, 3 km north of Highway 16. This wildfire is classified as out of control at 2,700 hectares in size and is 65 per cent contained.
• There are 80 wildland firefighters, helicopters, and heavy equipment working to control this wildfire.
• Airtankers are available if required.
• Structural protection unit is on scene and integrating operations with Yellowhead County.
• Heavy equipment worked through the night to contain the excursion on the north side of fire. The fire also crossed established guard on the SW corner, heavy equipment contained that excursion as well.
• An evacuation order is in place for residents East of the Pembina.

HWF-030 (Fox Lake)

• Wildfire HWF-030 is in the community of Fox Lake. This wildfire is classified as out of control at 16,390 hectares.
• There are 70 firefighters, aircraft, structure protection crews with vehicle, heavy equipment and helicopters working on this fire. Airtankers are also supporting this wildfire. 
• The community of Fox Lake has been fully evacuated to the town of High Level.
• Alberta Wildfire is actively suppressing this wildfire with the current resources. 

HWF-036

• This wildfire is located near the Rainbow Lake Community. It is classified as out of control at 2,130 hectares.
• Alberta Wildfire is responding with 44 firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters.
• County has declared a State of Local Emergency and is on an evacuation alert to prepare residents for possible evacuation. 

RCU-005

• Wildfire RCU-005 is 2 km from the south edge of Drayton Valley. It is classified as out of control at 3,500 hectares.
• Alberta Wildfire is responding with 26 wildfire fighters and helicopters to the wildfire. Airtankers will also be supporting the firefighting efforts today. Brazeau County has additional resources assisting with this wildfire. 

RWF-034

• Wildfire RWF-034 is located near the O’Chiese Reserve. It is classified as out of control at 51,000 hectares.
• The Reserve has been put on evacuation alert and several homes have been evacuated. 

GWF-017

• Wildfire GWF-017 is located 3 km Southeast of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. It is classified as out of control at 1,600 hectares.
• There are currently road closures in the area. 

GCU-003

• This wildfire is located Southwest of Grande Prairie. It is currently classified as out of control at 1,000 hectares.
• The County is leading an evacuation around the fire for a 10km radius.
• Smoke has impacted the ability to have aircraft responding to this wildfire. 

GWF-018

• This wildfire is in Clearhills County. It is classified as out of control at 8,500 hectares.
• There is heavy equipment working to build a guard around this wildfire.

WWF-023

• This wildfire is located in the Fox Creek Area. It is classified as out of control at 15,000 hectares.
• There are 16 firefighters, two helicopters and heavy equipment responding to this wildfire.
• An evacuation order was issued May 6 for people in this area.

SWF-053/058/063 Merged together (Grizzly Complex)

• The Grizzly Complex is comprised of SWF-053, SWF-058 and SWF-063. This wildfire is still classified as out of control at 58,000 hectares.

SWF-060

• This wildfire is located in the Utikima Lake, Whitefish Lake and Gift Lake First Nation. It is classified as out of control at 10,000 hectares.
• There are 24 firefighters, five helicopters and heavy equipment responding to this wildfire.

SWF-068

• This wildfire is located in the area of the Peavine Metis Settlement. It is classified as out of control at 10,000 hectares. 
• Firefighters along with heavy equipment and helicopters are responding to this wildfire.

RCU-005

• Wildfire RCU-005 is 2 km from the south edge of Drayton Valley. It is classified as out of control at 1,500 ha.
• Alberta Wildfire has sent 26 wildfire fighters, three helicopters to the wildfire. Airtankers will also be supporting the firefighting efforts today.

HWF-030

• Wildfire HWF-030 is located in the community of Fox Lake. This wildfire is classified as Out of Control (OC) at 4,383 hectares. There are 55 firefighters, 5 helicopters, six structure protection crews with vehicle, and 8 pieces of heavy equipment working on this fire.
• Alberta Wildfire assisted in the evacuation of the community of Fox Lake transporting 115 people via helicopter.

HWF-036

• Wildfire HWF-036 is located near the community of Rainbow Lake. This wildfire is 500 ha in size.
• There are 24 firefighters, two helicopters and eight pieces of heavy equipment are currently working the wildfire. Heavy bucketing helicopters are operating in the High Level area.
• Community of Fox Lake has been fully evacuated to the Town of High Level.
• 1,800 of the 3,600 residents have registered at reception centres

WCU002 

• Wildfire WCU-002 is approximately 7 km northwest of Evansburg on both sides of Highway 22, 3 km north of Highway 16. This wildfire is classified as out of control at 2,254 ha in size and is 65 pre cent contained
• There are 80 wildland firefighters, four helicopters, and 14 pieces of heavy equipment working to control this wildfire.
• Structural protection unit is on scene and integrating operations with Yellowhead County
• Heavy equipment worked through the night to contain the excursion on the north side of fire. The fire also crossed established guard on the SW corner, heavy equipment contained that excursion as well.

WCU-001: East side of the Pembina River, outside of the FPA.

• The wildfire is centred on the east side of the Pembina River and is out of control at 950 ha.
• Initial attack will action any spotting activity across the Pembina River
• An evacuation order is in place for residents East of the Pembina.

SWF-057 – Big Lakes County – 35 km South of Swan River First Nation

• Wildfire is out of control at 5 ha. An Evacuation Alert (prepare to evacuate) was issued just after midnight of May 5.
• 13 firefighters, 2 helicopters are assigned to the wildfire

SWF-058 – East Prairie

• The wildfire is currently out of control at 950 ha and is expected to overrun SWF-063

RWF-034 – 20 km from O’Chiese Reserve

• Wildfire is out of control at 12 ha.
• There are 26 firefighters, 2 intermediate and 2 medium helicopter, and 1 airtanker working the wildfire.

RWF-031 – Bighorn Reserve

• Wildfire is out of control at 12 ha.
• There are 24 firefighters, 3 helicopters working the wildfire.

RWF-031 – 43 km SE of Edson

• The wildfire is out of control at 24,000 ha.
• Oil and gas facilities and one campground evacuated last night.
• There are 3 dozer groups on standby to action and three helicopters working the wildfire.
• Airtanker support and an ignition specialist has also been requested.

There are three wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

HWF-030

• WildfireHWF-030 is located in the community of Fox Lake. This wildfire is classified as Out of Control (OC) at 1,458 hectares. There are 36 firefighters, 3 helicopters, local firefighters, and heavy equipment working on this fire. Airtankers will be supporting firefighters today as requested. 
  
  
• Overnight firefighters were able to work the southeast side of the fire putting out flames and hotspots. Heavy equipment worked to complete fire guards around nearby homes as well.
  
  
• This morning crews have reported active open flame on the northeast corner of the fire. This area of the fire will be the priority for crews today. On the west side of the fire the retardant lines laid down by the airtankers has been effective in preventing further spread towards the community.
  
  
• The forecast is calling for a temperature of 27 degrees, and winds south 15 km/h -20 km/h gusting 35 km/h.
  
  
• Little Red River Cree Nation has evacuated homes within proximity to fire number HWF030. Evacuees have been instructed to go to the Fox Lake Band office or call 1-888-201-3053.

HWF-036

• Wildfire HWF-036 is located near the community of Rainbow Lake. This wildfire is 400 ha in size.
  
  
• 18 firefighters, two helicopters and eight pieces of heavy equipment are currently working the wildfire. Heavy bucketing helicopters are re-positioning to the High Level area to assist. An additional 24 firefighters and an incident management team have been dispatched.

WCU-002

• is approximately 7 km northwest of Evansburg on both sides of Highway 22, 3 km north of Highway 16. This wildfire is classified as Out of Control at 2,300 ha in size.
  
  
• Today, a total of 14 pieces of heavy equipment and six helicopters will be assisting 64 firefighters, additional firefighters are expected to arrive today.
  
  
• An Incident Management Team from Alberta Wildfire assumed command of the incident last night. A structural protection unit has been deployed at the wildfire and is working with Yellowhead County.
  
  
• The County has lifted the evacuation order and residents are returning to their homes.

Size: 2,320 hectares (ha)

Location: Approximately 7 km northwest of Evansburg on both sides of Highway 22, 3 km north of Highway 16.

Infrastructure nearby: scattered farms and residences, Highway 16, Hamlet of Evansburg

Resources assigned: 75 wildland firefighters, six helicopters, seven pieces of heavy equipment.

Comments:

The Yellowhead Highway was re-opened to east and westbound traffic as of 1:45 pm May 2nd.

Priority of work is perimeter containment with fire guard established around 75 per cent of the wildfire. The remaining 25 percent is not accessible to the dozers and is being controlled by aircraft and crews.

Comments:

Bulldozers have established a fireguard around 70 per cent of the wildfire.

Weather conditions are expected to remain hot and dry with winds. The fire danger is high for the area today.

Comments:

There were northeast winds over the wildfire. Firefighters conducted successful controlled burn operations yesterday. Bulldozer lines are complete from peat farms in the area to the Lobstick River on the south flank. 

An Incident Management Team from Alberta Wildfire assumed command for the incident last night.

A structural protection unit has been deployed at the wildfire and is working with Yellowhead County.

An evacuation order is currently in place for affected areas in Yellowhead County. The evacuation order will remain in place until it is determined that residents can safely return to their homes and there is no risk to residents or infrastructure.

WCU001 was detected on April 29 and is located approximately 9 km southeast of Evansburg. The estimated size is currently 340 ha. AB Wildfire is assisting Parkland County to fight this wildfire.

Airtankers and helicopters will continue to work on the wildfire from the air.

Parkland County has a mandatory evacuation order in place for residents living between Range Road 65 to the Pembina River, north of Township Road 530 to Highway 16, including all residents of Entwistle. Weather conditions are expected to be challenging for firefighters. The fire danger is high for the area today.

Size: 2,221 hectares (ha)

Location: Approximately 7 km northwest of Evansburg on both sides of Highway 22, 3 km north of Highway 16.

Resources assigned: 45 wildfire fighters and six helicopters.

Comments:

WCU002 was detected on the evening of April 29. Originally the wildfire was two separate incidents - WCU002 on the east side of Hwy 22 and EWF017 on the west side of Hwy 22; they are now combined as the single incident WCU002.

The wildfire is burning out of control and moving towards the west-northwest. It is estimated to be 3,000 ha in size. The fire is burning in a mixture of grass, shrub, trees and marsh. Strong winds, warm temperatures, and very dry fuel are the main factors contributing to the rapid spread of this wildfire.

Last night, dozers were on the fire line building containment lines. Early this morning, firefighters used hand ignition techniques to burn off and remove some of the available fuel to re-enforce existing containment lines. 

Both Yellowhead County and AB Wildfire are working together to contain the spread of the wildfire. Today, we have a total of 13 pieces of heavy equipment and three helicopters assisting 21 firefighters.

Airtankers have arrived in the area and will start building containment lines.

The Yellowhead County evacuation order is currently in place for the affected areas in Yellowhead County. The evacuation order will remain until it is determined that residents can safely return to their homes and there is no risk to residents and other infrastructure.

All evacuated residents should call 1-833-334-4630 to register as an evacuee or for more information.

There are currently no wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

A wildfire of note is determined to be of significant public interest and may pose a threat to public safety, communities or critical infrastructure.

Wildfires of note do not typically include mutual aid wildfires located outside of the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Alberta Wildfire provides assistance on a mutual aid wildfire but is not the lead agency.
