HWF030 - Amber River

HWF030 is classified as out of control at approximately 3,350 hectares. This wildfire is located about 8.5 km southwest of Zama in the High Level Forest Area. Temperatures are expected to reach 22 degrees today, with a relative humidity of 25-30% with winds from the north at 20-25 km/h gusting up to 40 km/h.

There are currently 125 firefighters with helicopters and heavy equipment groups responding to this wildfire. This includes three air tanker groups, which are currently working on the fire. An incident management team, which will coordinate frontline operations and supporting resources, is now in the Zama area to manage this wildfire.

There is one wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

HWF030

HWF030 is classified as out of control at approximately 2,100 hectares. This wildfire is located about 8.5 km southwest of Zama in the High Level Forest Area. Temperatures are expected to reach 26 degrees today, with a relative humidity of 35 per cent today with winds from the northeast at 15-20 km/h.

There are currently 72 firefighters with air and heavy equipment groups responding to this wildfire. This includes three air tanker groups, which are currently working on the fire. An incident management team, which will coordinate frontline operations and supporting resources, is now in the Zama area to manage this wildfire.

Crews are established on the south, east and southeast flanks. These perimeter flanks are expected to hold well throughout the day. Work continues on the dozer guard, which is currently providing about 30 per cent containment, however, there are some challenges in areas with wet terrain. Fire and emergency management personnel from other jurisdictions have been briefed and are prepared to augment our efforts, if required, at reinforcing perimeter/fireguard areas around Zama.

The north and northeast flank of the fire, which is closest to Zama, burned into a low-lying wet area that slowed its spread towards Zama City. The wildfire is now burning in a northwest direction towards a large, wet area (the fire moved 0.5 km closer to Zama overnight; a total of 3.5 km closer since it started).

Structural protection crews have made good progress in Zama, with sprinkler systems expected to be operational this afternoon.

With the arrival of an additional 20 firefighters, we expect to have 92 firefighters today, along with ongoing air and ground support. Firefighters. air support and heavy equipment operators will continue to work day and night to contain and control this wildfire.

Night operations are planned for tonight when fire behavior is more subdued. Heavy equipment and firefighters along with night vision helicopters will work on getting this wildfire contained.

Mackenzie County has issued an evacuation notice for Zama, as this wildfire (HWF030) to the SW of Zama is continuing to advance toward Chateh Road and the Zama Access Road. For more information, please visit: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/N8v1mnqaSA55Qo1j/ or https://mackenziecounty.com/

There is one wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

HWF030

HWF030 is classified as out of control at approximately 700 hectares. This wildfire is located about 9 km southwest of Zama in the High Level Forest Area.

Yesterday, 35 firefighters, five helicopters, three airtankers and heavy equipment worked on containment lines for this wildfire. The wildfire showed active fire behavior in the afternoon which pushed it closer to Zama but is headed in the direction of a fuel break. Crews worked in the over night period with heavy equipment while fire behavior was lower to work on containment lines on the northeast side of the fire.

Today, 36 firefighters will continue to work alongside seven helicopters, heavy equipment and three airtankers to reinforce current containment lines. Additional crews are on their way to help with firefighting efforts. Increasing temperatures and winds will challenge firefighting efforts today.

Structural protection crews started setting up sprinkler protection yesterday and are expected to complete their deployment this afternoon.

Night operations are planned for tonight when fire behavior is more subdued. Heavy equipment and firefighters along with night vision helicopters will work on getting this wildfire contained.

There is one wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

MWF-017

MWF017 is classified as being held at 19,451 hectares. This means that given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries.

The closest point of the fire remains about 5.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill and 4.5 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.

There was no growth on the fire yesterday and fire activity was minimal. Over 45 mm of rain have fallen on the fire since May 16.

The change of status signifies that the risk of this wildfire growing towards the community and important infrastructure is greatly reduced. As such, structure protection equipment has been removed from areas where it had been installed.

Firefighters are back on the fire line today and are looking for and extinguishing hot spots to strengthen the containment lines. Helicopters are expected to fly today, if visibility permits, and will transport crews to the fire line.

There are 233 firefighters and 22 helicopters assigned to this wildfire.

Heavy equipment operators have completed their work on the containment lines and fire guards. They are on standby in case their help is required in the coming days.

An Alberta Wildfire incident management team is responsible for MWF017.

The cause of this wildfire remains under investigation.

This information is updated as required.
