Wildfires of note

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.


MWF-043 (Fort Fitzgerald)

  • This wildfire is located 20 km southeast of Fort Fitzgerald. It is classified as out of control 108,558 hectares.
  • There are firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment working on this wildfire.
  • Fire growth was minimal yesterday and did not get any closer to Fort Fitzgerald or Fort Smith.
  • Today, helicopters will continue bucketing on key locations along the wildfire perimeter. Crews are working to remove fuels between Myers Lake and an old burn site to stop the wildfire from spreading to the northwest.
  • A structural protection unit (SPU) crew is continuing to set up sprinkler systems in the event structural protection is required in surrounding communities. 

Basset Complex (HWF-058, PWF-067, PWF-079)

  • Wildfires HWF-058, PWF-067 and PWF-079 are part of the Basset Complex and are being managed together.
  • Wildfire HWF-058 is located 13 km northwest of Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement. It is classified as out of control at 39,575 hectares.
  • Wildfire PWF-067 is located 18 km from the intersection of the Keg River Highway and Highway 35 and 695 intersection. It is classified as out of control at 5,248 hectares.
  • Wildfire PWF-079 is classified as under control at 3 hectares.
  • There are firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment working on this complex.
  • The recent rain received on this wildfire fire activity has been reduced. Firefighters continue to work on extinguishing hotspots and strengthening containment lines. They are assisted by helicopters who are bucketing in the area. Heavy equipment continues to extend the containment lines.

Wildfires of note do not typically include mutual aid wildfires located outside of the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Alberta Wildfire provides assistance on a mutual aid wildfire but is not the lead agency.
