Wildfires of note

There is one wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

MWF-017

MWF017 is classified as being held at 19,451 hectares. This means that given current weather conditions and resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries.

The closest point of the fire remains about 5.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill and 4.5 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.

There was no growth on the fire yesterday and fire activity was minimal. Over 40 mm of rain have fallen on the fire since May 16.

The change of status signifies that the risk of this wildfire growing towards the community and important infrastructure is greatly reduced. As such, we are in the process of removing structure protection equipment from the areas where it had been installed.

Heavy equipment operators have built over 25 km of fire guard to the southwest of Fort McMurray. Now that this work is complete, we are downsizing our compliment of heavy equipment. There are 24 heavy equipment operators still assigned to MWF017, who are extending the containment line around the perimeter of the wildfire.

Visibility has improved and helicopters are flying once again. Firefighters are looking for hot spots, digging them up and extinguishing them. This is a lengthy process that requires time and hard work to complete.

There are 233 firefighters and 22 helicopters assigned to this wildfire.

Once warm and dry conditions return, the interior of the wildfire will become more active. Pockets of unburnt vegetation may catch on fire and smoke may be visible once again. This is normal and expected. Firefighters, with the support of helicopters, will continue to extinguish hot spots until the wildfire is brought under control.

An additional 5 mm of rain fell on the fire overnight and light showers are in the forecast today. Over 40 mm of rain have fallen on the fire since May 16.

Helicopters will likely be grounded today due to the weather conditions. Firefighters can now access the fire line by ground transport and will work to extinguish hot spot.

Heavy equipment operators worked overnight and will continue to work on a containment line on the north and east sides of the wildfire today.

There are 233 firefighters, 24 helicopters and 40 pieces of heavy equipment currently assigned to the wildfire.

Structure protection is in place in the Abasand, Prairie Creek, Grayling Terrace and Beacon Hill neighbourhoods, as well as on the Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176.

Unified command between Alberta Wildfire and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has ended. An Alberta Wildfire incident management team is responsible for the wildfire.

The cause of this wildfire remains under investigation.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has lifted the evacuation order for the neighbourhoods of Prairie Creek, Beacon Hill, Abasand, and Grayling Terrace.

The evacuation alert has been lifted for the rest of Fort McMurray, Saprae Creek, Gregoire Lake Estates, Fort McMurray 468 First Nation and Anzac.

The size was adjusted down slightly from yesterday after more accurate data was received.

There was no growth on the fire yesterday and fire activity was low.

About 10 mm of rain fell on the wildfire overnight, which will lead to subdued fire activity again today. About 20 mm of rain have fallen on the wildfire since the evening of May 16. More rain showers are in the forecast.

Helicopters will likely be grounded today due to the weather conditions. Heavy equipment operators worked through the night to establish ground access and firefighters will be back at work on the fire line today.

Heavy equipment operators have completed the construction of a fire guard that stretches from the Athabasca River to Highway 63. They will now redirect their efforts to the perimeter of the wildfire and will work to establish more containment line on the north and east sides.

There are 224 firefighters, 24 helicopters and 57 pieces of heavy equipment currently assigned to the wildfire.

Firefighters have completed structure protection in the Abasand, Prairie Creek, Grayling Terrace and Beacon Hill neighbourhoods, as well as on the Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176.

Alberta Wildfire and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo have entered unified command and will work together to manage this wildfire.

The cause of this wildfire remains under investigation.

The size has been revised down from yesterday, after an overnight scan provided more accurate information.

There was minimal growth on the fire yesterday and fire activity was low. About 10 mm of rain fell on the wildfire overnight, which will lead to subdued fire activity again today. More rain showers are in the forecast.

Firefighters will continue to work on a containment line today, depending on whether helicopters can fly. As there is no road access to this wildfire, crews must be transported by helicopter to the fire line.

Heavy equipment operators will continue to work on the fire guards southwest of Fort McMurray. They have been working overnight on the construction of these guards. Night vision helicopters were unable to fly last night, due to the weather conditions.

There are 224 firefighters, 22 helicopters and 57 pieces of heavy equipment currently assigned to the wildfire.

The size reduction is due to a more accurate scan of the wildfire perimeter, it does not mean that the wildfire has gotten smaller.

The wildfire experienced some growth towards the northwest yesterday, towards the Athabasca River.

As of 8 a.m. today, the closest point of the fire remains about 5.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill and 4.5 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.

The wildfire was less active yesterday, thanks to cooler temperatures, weaker winds and smoke cover. Some rain fell on the fire overnight, which should once again help to reduce fire activity.

Today, winds from the east at 15-20 km/h are forecasted. Rain showers are also forecasted throughout the day. This type of weather provides a good window for firefighters to make progress.

Firefighters will be back on the fire line today to work on a containment line. Helicopters and airtankers will continue to drop water on the active edges of the fire. Heavy equipment operators are building fire guards to the southwest of Fort McMurray.

There are 172 firefighters, 22 helicopters and 57 pieces of heavy equipment currently assigned to the wildfire.

Firefighters are working on structure protection in the Abasand neighbourhood. Structure protection has been put in place for the Prairie Creek and Beacon Hill neighbourhoods, as well as on the Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176.

Alberta wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with a wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek.

It is estimated to be 1,382 ha and is classified as being held. No substantial growth was observed yesterday.

This wildfire will be removed as a wildfire of note starting tomorrow.

The wildfire grew significantly to the northeast yesterday. As of 8am today, the closest point of the fire is about 5.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill and 4.5 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.

Two night vision helicopters worked overnight to drop water on the fire’s active edges and firefighters patrolled from the highway to monitor fire activity.

Less than 1 mm of rain fell on the wildfire overnight. Active fire behaviour is expected today but should be less than yesterday, thanks to cooler temperatures and weaker winds.

Winds from the northwest at 10 km/h are expected today, which should push the fire away from Fort McMurray and Highway 63. A high of 13C is expected.

Firefighters will be back on the fire line today and will work to establish a containment line. Helicopters and airtankers will continue to drop water and retardant on the active edges of the fire. Heavy equipment operators will build fire guards to the southwest of Fort McMurray.

There are 117 firefighters and 14 helicopters currently assigned to the wildfire.

Firefighters are working on structure protection in the Prairie Creek and Beacon Hill neighbourhoods. Structure protection was installed on the Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176. A plan is in place for structure protection along Amoco road, if required.

GCU-007 (The Kleskun Creek Fire) Alberta wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with an out of control wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek. It is estimated to be 1,382 ha and is classified as out of control.

Yesterday, fire behavior improved with no growth observed and minimal flare ups found. Wildfire crews continued to secure the perimeter with pump, hose and hand tools to reinforce the guard.

Today, more firefighters will arrive to help extinguish this wildfire.

MWF017 is classified as out of control at 9,602 hectares.

The wildfire grew significantly to the northeast yesterday. The closest point of the fire is about 13.5 km from the Fort McMurray landfill. The wildfire is about 13 km from the intersection of highways 63 and 881.

Fire behaviour increased in the afternoon yesterday and the fire was active into the evening. Shifting winds led to growth in multiple directions and created large smoke columns.

Two night vision helicopters and a heavy equipment group worked overnight.

Firefighters continue to work on establishing a containment line today. Heavy equipment are working on a fire guard to the southwest of Fort McMurray and on the northern edge of the fire. Helicopters and airtankers will be dropping water on the active edges of the fire. There are 70 firefighters and 14 helicopters currently assigned to the wildfire.

Today, winds are expected from the west-southwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 35 km/h, with a high of 21C. This will be a challenging day for firefighters. Smoke will be present in the area.

Structure protection was installed on the Rickards Landing Industrial Park, Gregoire Lake Estates and Gregoire Lake 176. A plan is in place for structure protection along Amoco road, if required. Firefighters are working on a plan for structure protection in the southern industrial part of Fort McMurray.

GCU-007 (The Kleskun Creek Fire) Alberta wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with an out of control wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek. It is estimated to be 1,382 ha and is classified as out of control.

Yesterday, firefighters were successful in suppressing the fire as no growth has been observed outside the perimeter. 

A night vision helicopter worked on this wildfire last night along with a wildfire crew and heavy equipment to secure perimeter on priority hotspots.

Today, additional firefighting resources will be arriving to help cold trail* and extinguish hotspots and work to extinguish the fire.

*Cold Trailing: A method of determining whether or not a fire is still burning, involving careful inspection and feeling with the hand, or by use of a hand-held infrared scanner, to detect any heat source.

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

MWF017 is currently classified as out of control at 6,579 hectares. The size of the fire was revised up to 6,579 hectares yesterday after a more accurate scan of the fire was conducted. It does not represent recent growth.

The wildfire remains 16 km southeast of Fort McMurray and 12 km of west of Highway 63.

Light rain showers are expected today, which will help lower fire activity. This will give firefighters a good window to continue making progress on containing the fire.

Winds are forecasted to be from the southeast at 15-20 km/h, shifting to the west-southwest this afternoon. The maximum temperature is expected to be 16C.

Heavy equipment are working on a fire guard on the northeast side of the fire. Six crews of firefighters continue to work on establishing a containment line, with the support of 13 helicopters. Airtankers are available if required.

Structure protection was installed on the industrial park located at the intersection of highways 63 and 881. Work continues today to set up structure protection on Gregoire Lake Estates and the Fort McMurray 468 First Nation, as a precautionary measure.

GCU-007 (The Kleskun Creek Fire) Alberta wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with an out of control wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek. It is estimated to be 1,382 ha and is classified as out of control. Fire behaviour is expected to increase today with southeast winds. No rain is expected for this area today. 

Crews will be reinforcing the fire guard that dozers have been working on over the weekend. They will also be extinguishing hotspots. 

A specialized heavy equipment group worked yesterday and made good progress on the perimeter of the fire. Crews are expected to return to work on the perimeter of the fire guard today. 

Smoke has let up in the area enough that aircraft will be flying today. Helicopters will be bucketing water on these wildfires with the addition of airtankers.

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

MWF-017 is currently classified as out of control at 5,501 hectares. It is located approximately 16 km southwest of Fort McMurray, on the south side of the Athabasca River valley. This wildfire grew substantially to the southeast yesterday, driven by strong winds. It is approximately 12 km west of Highway 63.

Fire behaviour is subdued this morning, but is expected to increase today as the temperature increases. Winds from the southeast at 20 km/h are expected today and should push the wildfire towards the Athabasca River. 

Night vision helicopters worked overnight and dropped water on the southeastern edge. Six crews of wildland firefighters, 13 helicopters and airtankers will work on this wildfire today. Heavy equipment will work on establishing a fire guard on the northeast edge of the fire. Structure protection is being established in Gregoire Lake Estates and Fort McMurray 468 First Nation as a precaution. 

An Incident Management Team has arrived in Fort McMurray to manage this wildfire.

GCU-007 Alberta wildfire is assisting the County of Grande Prairie with an out of control wildfire 4 km east of the town of Teepee Creek. It is estimated to be 1,400 ha and is classified as out of control. Fire behaviour is expected to increase today. 

This wildfire moved over 12 kilometers yesterday in an eastward direction crossing the Smoky River. The fire has burned about 80 hectares on the east side of the river. Alberta Wildfire along with the County of Grande Prairie are working to complete a fire guard around this wildfire.

A specialized heavy equipment group worked yesterday and made good progress on the perimeter of the fire. Crews are expected to return to work on the perimeter of the fire guard today. 

Winds are expected to shift from the southwest today which will push the fire northeast. 

Smoke has let up in the area enough that aircraft will be flying today. Helicopters will be bucketing water on these wildfires with the addition of airtankers.

Five crews of wildland firefighters, nine helicopters and airtankers worked on this fire today.

A wildfire of note is determined to be of significant public interest and may pose a threat to public safety, communities or critical infrastructure.

Wildfires of note do not typically include mutual aid wildfires located outside of the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Alberta Wildfire provides assistance on a mutual aid wildfire but is not the lead agency.
