Wildfires of note

There are five wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfires ANP002 and ANP003 are classified as out of control and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 36,000 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

Slightly warmer and drier conditions today. West to southwest winds along a trough axis affixed to a second low tracking north of the site. Precipitation chances remain minimal. Crews will continue to secure perimeters and work on areas near structures and infrastructure.

Alberta Wildfire is assisting Parks Canada with the Jasper Wildfire Complex by providing firefighters, heavy equipment and a helicopter. For the most up-to-date information on this Complex, visit Parks Canada's website.

MCX002 - Cattail Lake Complex 

Wildfires MWF047 and MWF077 and MWF079 are part of the Cattail Lake Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control. They were caused by lightning.

MWF047 is the largest wildfire in this complex and is 106,726 ha in size. This wildfire is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, 53 km northeast Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF077 is 17,814 hectares in size. This wildfire is located approximately 6.7 km south of industrial facilities, 38 km east of Fort McKay and 46 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF079 is located near the Saskatchewan border and is 379 ha in size.

Rain fell on all fires within the complex yesterday afternoon and overnight. With higher humidity and recent precipitation, fire behaviour is expected to be minimal today. Firefighters and air operations were delayed due to low cloud and rain, Weather conditions are expected to change this afternoon allowing crews to travel to the fire line and resume their operations.

There are over 160 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and seven pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

The Kettle River Complex includes 17 wildfires: LWF101 LWF123, LWF124, LWF126, LWF136, LWF139, LWF140, LWF141, LWF142, LWF143, LWF152, LWF155, LWF156, LWF159, LWF162, LWF164, LWF168 and LWF175.

LWF164 is classified as out of control at 1,400 ha in size. It is located approximately 12km northeast of Conklin along highway 881. Heavy equipment will continue to work to establish a dozer guard along the west and southeast fire perimeters. Operations staff are looking for opportunities to establish hose lines on the east and northeast perimeters in the days ahead.

LWF141 is classified as under control at 36 ha in size. It is located approximately 3 km north of Chard. Good progress was made on this fire yesterday. A fire guard has now been completed on the southern perimeter of this fire.

LWF152 is classified as out of control at 475 ha in size. It is located approximately 22 km northeast of Conklin and 10 km southeast of Highway 881. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

There are over 150 firefighters and support staff, nine helicopters and 14 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to this complex.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

HWF061 is the largest wildfire in the complex and is 96,181 ha in size. It is located 8 km northeast of Jon D'or Prairie, 12 km north of Fox Lake and 2.2 km from Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is 5,469 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

HWF053 is 709 ha in size and is located directly above HWF061.

Strong, gusting winds impacted operations and limited most helicopter use yesterday. The gusty winds created dangerous conditions for firefighters working on-the-ground. Despite this, firefighters were able to access the spot fire at the furthest southern portion of HWF061 for the first time and began to establish line.

Heavy equipment operators are hard at work today and will keep working towards completing access routes north of Highway 58, assisting with accessibility directly to the southern perimeter of HWF061.

There are over 300 firefighters and support staff, 15 helicopters and 73 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

MCX003 - Algar Lake Complex

Wildfires MWF069 and MWF086 and LWF165 make up the Algar Lake Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

MWF069 is 17,183 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray. Conditions have eased with significant rain falling overnight, firefighters cannot access the fire due to rain. Heavy equipment will work to enhance control line where access is available. Fire behaviour is expected to be minimal. Aircraft will patrol throughout the day.

MWF086 is 2,251 ha in size. It is located 37 km southwest of Fort McMurray. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

LWF165 is 1,883 hectares in size. It is located 20 km south of Crow Lake. Firefighters are working on hot spots on the north and south sides of the fire and east and west of HWY 63. Heavy equipment have completed containment lines on the west side of Highway 63. They will now move to establish containment lines on the portion of the wildfire on the east side of the highway.

There are over 122 firefighters and support staff working on this complex, 13 helicopters and 16 pieces of heavy equipment. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

There are no immediate concerns for travel disruptions to the highway. Visit 511 Alberta for the most up-to date information on road closues.

Cooler temperatures and rain last night led to minimal fire behaviour and spread. This precipitation will likely keep fire behaviour low for the next few days. Crews will take advantage of these conditions to make as much progress possible in suppressing the wildfire and reducing further spread.

MCX002 - Cattail Lake Complex 

Wildfires MWF047 and MWF077 and MWF079 are part of the Cattail Lake Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control. They were caused by lightning.

MWF047 is the largest wildfire in this complex and is 106,726 ha in size. This wildfire is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, 53 km northeast Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF077 is 17,814 hectares in size. This wildfire is located approximately 6.7 km south of industrial facilities, 38 km east of Fort McKay and 46 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF079 is located near the Saskatchewan border and is 345 ha in size.

Higher humidity and cloud cover is keeping fire behaviour low on this complex. If weather conditions permit, crews will continue to strengthen containment lines in priority areas with the support of helicopters.

There are over 160 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and seven pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

The Kettle River Complex includes 17 wildfires: LWF101 LWF123, LWF124, LWF126, LWF136, LWF139, LWF140, LWF141, LWF142, LWF143, LWF152, LWF155, LWF156, LWF159, LWF162, LWF164 and LWF168.

LWF136 is now classified as being held at 765 ha in size. It remains approximately 12 km north of the community of Janvier. Minimal fire behaviour was observed yesterday. Construction of the fire guard has been completed. Today, ground crews will work on establishing hose lines inside the fire's perimeter. Helicopters are able to support if necessary.

LWF164 is classified as out of control at 1,400 ha in size. It is located approximately 12km northeast of Conklin along highway 881. Fire behaviour on this wildfire yesterday was also reported to be minimal. The area of the highway impacted by the fire has since been contained. Today, heavy equipment will continue to work on establishing fire guards on the west side of the fire. Firefighters will continue to consolidate hose lines on the dozer guard north of the highway.

LWF141 is classified as under control at 36 ha in size. It is located approximately 3 km north of Chard. Good progress was made on this fire yesterday. A fire guard has now been completed on the southern perimeter of this fire.

LWF152 is classified as out of control at 475 ha in size. It is located approximately 22 km northeast of Conklin and 10 km southeast of Highway 881. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

There are over 150 firefighters and support staff, nine helicopters and 14 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to this complex.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has rescinded it's evacuation alert for the hamlet of Janvier. Visit their website for more information.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

HWF061 is the largest wildfire in the complex and is 96,181 ha in size. It is located 8 km northeast of Jon D'or Prairie, 12 km north of Fox Lake and 2.2 km from Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is 5,469 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

HWF053 is 709 ha in size and is located directly above HWF061.

Yesterday, helicopters conducted bucketing operations on key areas of the wildfires. Fire activity increased in a few areas of both HWF061 and HWF136 and led to some growth. Heavy equipment continues to work on containment lines overnight while fire activity is more subdued.

Night-vision enabled helicopters conducted bucketing operations on this complex overnight. Night operations will likely continue tonight if conditions permit. Heavy equipment operators completed the extension of the containment line along Highway 58

There are over 300 firefighters and support staff, 15 helicopters and 73 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

MCX003 - Algar Lake Complex

Wildfires MWF069 and MWF086 and LWF165 make up the Algar Lake Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

MWF069 is 17,183 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray. Recent rain received has made access to this fire difficult due to it's remote location. Firefighters are on standby to resume operations if conditions improve. Fire behaviour is expected to be minimal today.

MWF086 is 2,251 ha in size. It is located 37 km southwest of Fort McMurray. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

LWF165 is 1,883 hectares in size. It is located 20 km south of Crow Lake. Heavy equipment have completed containment lines on the west side of Highway 63. They will now move to establish containment lines on the portion of the wildfire on the east side of the highway.

There are over 120 firefighters and support staff working on this complex, 13 helicopters and 16 pieces of heavy equipment. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

There are no immediate concerns for travel disruptions to the highway. Visit 511 Alberta for the most up-to date information on road closues.

The fire line west of the highway is now wrapped, and the fire has been contained. Firefighters are working to establish hoselines on the dozer guard north of the highway and heavy equipment will work to establish a guard along the west side of the fire.

LWF152 is classified as out of control at 475 ha in size. It is located approximately 22 km northeast of Conklin and 10 km southeast of Highway 881. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

MWF047 is the largest wildfire in this complex and is 104,619 ha in size. This wildfire is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, 53 km northeast Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF077 is 17,962 hectares in size. This wildfire is located approximately 6.7 km south of industrial facilities, 46 km east of Fort McKay and 48 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

Crews continue to work on strengthening the containment lines, with the support of helicopters who are bucketing on hot spots. Their work is focused on the southwest edge of MWF047 and the northwest edge of MWF077. Ground retardant continues to be applied to power poles in the area.

There are over 250 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and 30 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

LWF136 is classified as out of control at 765 ha in size. It is located approximately 12 km north of the community of Janvier and 3 km from highway 881. Today, crews will continue to reinforce the containment lines using water pumps and hoses. Heavy equipment has completed the construction of the guard around the fire's perimeter. Ground crews will continue to establish containment lines on the south side of the wildfires, and helicopters are ready to support crews and heavy equipment if necessary.

LWF164 is classified as out of control at 1054 ha in size. It is located approximately 12km northeast of Conklin along highway 881. Last night, night-vision capable helicopters were able to bucket on the portion of the fire that jumped Highway 881 and were successful in keeping it contained. Today, a Firetack crew and heavy equipment will continue to establish a dozer guard along the east and south sides of the wildfire.

LWF152 is classified as out of control at 465 ha in size. This wildfire is being monitored for growth and fire activity.

There are over 100 firefighters and support staff, seven helicopters and 14 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to this complex.

Heavy equipment operators continued to remove vegetation along Highway 58 overnight, working east of the recently completed community containment line adjacent to Highway 58.

There are over 400 firefighters and support staff, 14 helicopters and 51 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

MCX003 - Algar Lake Complex

Wildfires MWF069 and MWF086 make up the Algar Lake Complex. Both of these wildfires are out of control.

MWF069 is 17,127 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

MWF086 is 1,682 ha in size. It is located 37 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

Firefighters made good progress on the northeast corner of MWF069 yesterday. They will continue to patrol and action hot spots moving inward from the established perimeter on the northeast corner. They will also continue working northward along the perimeter with the support of bucketing helicopters. Aerial resources will also be focusing on the eastern flank throughout the day. Fire activity remained low to moderate yesterday under windy conditions.

There are over 150 firefighters and support staff working on this complex, eight helicopters and 25 pieces of heavy equipment. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Fire behaviour picked up moderately yesterday as the smoke dissipated into the afternoon. Increaed fire behaviour is expected today. Crews have made very good progress on the fires in this complex, and the containment lines have so far held. Today, helicopters will continue to bucket in key locations as visibility allows.

There are over 250 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and 30 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Yesterday, heavy equipment completed the construction of the fire guard around the fire's perimeter. Crews are now using pumps and hoses to reinforce the containment lines. Helicopters are ready to support if necessary.

LWF164 is classified as out of control at 1054 ha in size. It is located approximately 12km northeast of Conklin along highway 881. Last night, night-vision capable helicopters were able to bucket on the portion of the fire that jumped Highway 881 and were successful in keeping it contained. Today, heavy equipment will be working on the west side of Highway 881.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

HWF061 is the largest wildfire in the complex and is 96,274 ha in size. It is located 8 km northeast of Jon D'or Prairie, 4.2 km north of Fox Lake, 13 km northwest of Garden River and 2.2 km from Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is 4,763 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

HWF053 is 709 ha in size and is located directly above HWF061.

There was minimal fire growth on this complex overnight due to smoky conditions. Overnight, heavy equipment continued to strengthen containment lines north of highway 58. Our collaborative efforts with Little Red River Cree Nation helped us make measurable progress on this complex. Today, firefighters will work to extinguish hotspots if the conditions permit.

There are over 400 firefighters and support staff, 14 helicopters and 51 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

MCX003 - Algar Lake Complex

Wildfires MWF069 and MWF086 make up the Algar Lake Complex. Both of these wildfires are out of control.

MWF069 is 17,127 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

MWF086 is 1,682 ha in size. It is located 37 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

While smoky conditions impacted air operations yesterday, the decrease in temperature from the smoke cover provided favorable conditions for crews and equipment on the ground to make progress. Today, crews are preparing for a potential increase in fire behaviour.

There are over 150 firefighters and support staff working on this complex, eight helicopters and 25 pieces of heavy equipment. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Wildfires MWF047 and MWF077 and MWF079 are part of the Cattail Lake Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control except for MWF079, which is being held.

MWF047 is the largest wildfire in this complex and is 105,515 ha in size. This wildfire is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, 53 km northeast Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

MWF077 is 19,122 hectares in size.

This wildfire is located approximately 13.7 km south of industrial facilities, 46 km east of Fort McKay and 38 km northeast of Fort McMurray.

Smoky conditions continued yesterday, keeping fire behavior lower with no significant growth observed. We are running 24 hour operations on this complex and have made good progress. Crews and helicopters continue their work to establish containment lines on the western flank of MWF047.

There are over 250 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and 30 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

The Kettle River Complex includes 17 wildfires: LWF101 LWF123, LWF124, LWF126, LWF136, LWF139, LWF140, LWF141, LWF142, LWF143, LWF152, LWF155, LWF156, LWF159, LWF162, LWF164 and LWF168.

LWF136 is classified as out of control at 500 ha in size. It is located approximately 12 km north of the community of Janvier and 3 km from highway 881.

LWF164 is classified as out of control at 936 ha in size. It is located approximately 12km northeast of Conklin along highway 881.

LWF152 is classified as out of control at 406 ha in size.

Yesterday, fire activity was observed on the west and east side of LWF136. Crews continued to make good progress on establishing the fire guard and night-vision enabled helicopters were able to bucket overnight. Today, crews and heavy equipment will continue to establish the fire guard towards the south.

Over 70 firefighters and support staff, two groups of heavy equipment along with night-vision capable helicopters are working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Wildfires MWF069 and MWF086 make up the Algar Lake Complex. Both of these wildfires are out of control.

MWF069 is 16,555 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

MWF086 is 1,682 ha in size. This wildfire is located approximately 8km north of the MWF069 perimeter.

Both wildfires in this complex experienced lower fire behaviour over the past few days due to smoky conditions. However, increased fire behaviour is expected in the upcoming days as the smoke dissipates. Heavy equipment is working on containment lines with the support of crews and helicopter bucketing.

There are over 100firefighters and support staff working on this complex, along with seven helicopters and 11 pieces of heavy equipment. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Minimal growth was observed on this wildfire yesterday due to smokey conditions. Structural protection is being set up and tested in Garden River and will start in John D'or Prairie afterwards. Today, heavy equipment and firefighters will continue their work in expanding containment lines.

There are over 200 firefighters and support staff, 14 helicopters and 132 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations. Additional resources will be added later this week.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

Wildfire LWF136 is burning out of control in the Lac La Biche Forest Area. This wildfire is approximately 500 hectares (ha) in size. It is located approximately 15 km north of Janvier. 

Fire activity was subdued yesterday due to the smoke. Smokey conditions will persist today and make air support challenging. They will continue to respond when conditions are safe to do so. Crews are preparing for another challenging day for firefighting. There is potential for extreme wildfire behavior once smoky conditions clear.

Today, heavy equipment is working on building containment lines on southern flank of this fire. If visibility improves, helicopters and airtankers will provide support. Fire activity is expected to remain intense throughout the weekend as the hot and dry weather continues. Heavy equipment continues to work on the fireguard.

There are over 200 firefighters and support staff, ten helicopters and 43 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations. Additional resources will be added later this week.

Wildfire MWF069 and MWF086 make up the Algar Lake Complex. As a result of a lightning storm, wildfire MWF086 was detected yesterday and is now included in this complex.

Wildfire MWF069 is out of control and is 16,456 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10 km west of Highway 63 and 40 km southwest of Fort McMurray.

Wildfire MWF086 is out of control and is approximately 1,682 ha in size. This wildfire is located approximately 8km north of the MWF069 perimeter.

Air operations were grounded yesterday at the Algar Lake Complex due to persisting widespread smoke in the air. The smoke cooled temperatures and provided subdued fire behaviour in the areas where crews were working.

There are over 110 firefighters and support staff, seven helicopters and 11 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

HWF030 - Amber River Fire

Wildfire HWF030 is out of control and is approximately 3,221 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10km southwest of Zama City and is now classified as being held. Today, crews will work on priority areas of the fire.

LCX001 - Kettle River Complex

Wildfire LWF136 is burning out of control in the Lac La Biche Forest Area. This wildfire is approximately 500 hectares (ha) in size. It is located approximately 15 km north of Janvier. 

This wildfire grew to the southwest yesterday. Night operations responded in the overnight hours when it was safe to due so. Smoky conditions are making air support challenging. They will continue to respond when the conditions are safe to do so. Crews and heavy equipment are back working on this wildfire today focusing on establishing a fire guard on the southern perimeter with support from helicopters. There is potential for extreme wildfire behavior once smoky conditions clear today. Crews are preparing for another challenging day for firefighting.

Wildfire MWF086 is out of control and is approximately 500 ha in size. This wildfire is located approximately 8km north of the MWF069 perimeter.

Yesterday, fire crews consolidated and retrieved firefighting equipment from key areas. This equipment is ready to be repositioned based on areas of priority. Bucketing helicopters and airtankers actioned hot spots on the fire, notably on the north side of the northeast corner, where fire MWF069 did take on some growth on Wednesday afternoon.

There are 160 firefighters and support staff, seven helicopters and heavy equipment assigned to this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

HWF030 - Amber River Fire

Wildfire HWF030 is out of control and is approximately 3,156 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10km southwest of Zama City. Dozers have completed a fireguard along the south side of the fire, and crews are working on reinforcing containment lines. Helicopters are supporting this wildfire by bucketing on priority areas.

There are 134 firefighters and support staff, 12 helicopters and heavy equipment assigned to this complex.

This wildfire is approximately 6.8 km northeast of industrial facilities, 53 km northeast Fort McKay and 68 km northeast of Fort McMurray. Yesterday the fire showed extreme fire behaviour and grew to the east due to slight winds. 

MWF077 is 15,206 hectares in size. This wildfire is located approximately 13.7 km south of industrial facilities, 46 km east of Fort McKay and 38 km northeast of Fort McMurray. Yesterday, helicopters bucketed along the northern edge of this wildfire. Most of the fire growth was towards the east. Another challenging day for firefighting is expected today.

There are 246 firefighters and support staff, 19 helicopters and 29 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

LWF136 - Kettle River Fire

Wildfire LWF136 is burning out of control in the Lac La Biche Forest Area. This wildfire is approximately 214 hectares (ha) in size. It is located approximately 15 km north of Janvier. Heavy equipment along with firefighters are working to create a fireguard on the south and east sides to limit growth towards the highway. Helicopters are bucketing on priority areas and airtankers will be responding to help create a fireguard. 

An evacuation alert has been issued for the hamlet of Janvier by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo due to this wildfire.

Wildfire MWF086 is out of control and is approximately 500 ha in size. This wildfire is located approximately 8km north of the MWF069 perimeter.

Key areas where crews and heavy equipment have been working on the northeast corner have seen limited spread, which means that the easternmost portion of MWF069 has not progressed significantly toward highway 63 for the time being. Other uncontained areas of the fire perimeter were very active yesterday and did progress east toward highway 63. At this time, the most active areas are still over 10 km from the highway.

There are 159 firefighters and support staff, seven helicopters and heavy equipment assigned to this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Wildfire HWF030 is out of control and is approximately 3,050 ha in size. This wildfire is located 10km southwest of Zama City. Dozers have completed a fireguard along the south side of the fire, and crews are working on reinforcing containment lines. Helicopters are supporting this wildfire by bucketing on priority areas.
