Wildfires of note

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as being held. Parks Canada estimates its size to be 33,000 ha.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex.

HWF061 is classified as out of control and is 106,574 ha in size. It is located 19 km northeast of John D'or Prairie, 15 km north of Fox Lake and 1.9 km north of Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is classified as out of control and is 6,158 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

Other fires in this complex are within or near the Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires are being held and are being monitored for growth and activity. 

Firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment continue to work along the southern perimeter of HWF061 to extinguish hotspots and reduce spread. There is still heat over the southern perimeter of the guard but crews are working hard to contain these small excursions and extinguish them. Heavy equipment is also working on the west side moving to the south as operators construct line. The north side of HWF061 is seeing some activity which we continue to monitor.

Construction of the guard on the northeast perimeter of HWF136 is continuing as equipment travels west to build containment lines. There is minimal activity on HWF136 but crews and heavy equipment are working to tie in small excursions with natural fuel breaks on the northwest corner. Crews are working to extinguish a small hotspot located near the excursion on the southern edge of HWF136 that extends south to highway 58. They will move to other priority areas when they're finished. 

There are currently 596 firefighters and support personnel, 24 helicopters and 130 pieces of heavy equipment working on the Semo Wildfire Complex.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as out of control. Parks Canada estimates its size to be approximately 33,000 ha.

Crews were able to contain 100% of the priority northwest perimeter to protect the town of Jasper. Forecasts show chances of showers this weekend and this should allow crews to make progress in minimizing fire activity in other parts of the park.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex.

HWF061 is classified as out of control and is 106,709 ha in size. It is located 19 km northeast of John D'or Prairie, 15 km north of Fox Lake and 1.9 km north of Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is classified as out of control and is 6,236 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

Other fires in this complex are within or near the Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires are being held and are being monitored for growth and activity. 

Firefighters, helicopters and heavy equipment continue to work along the southern perimeter of HWF061 to extinguish hotspots and reduce spread. The guard on the east side of the fire is nearly complete. There are small excursions over the south perimeter guard but crews are working hard to contain them with additional guard and extinguish. Heavy equipment is also on the west side moving to the south as operators extend the containment line. The northeast side of HWF061 continues to see some fire activity which we continue to monitor. There are no concerns in that area at this time as the fire is moving north into the previously burnt area of HWF141.

There is minimal activity on HWF136 but crews and heavy equipment are working to tie in small excursions with natural fuel breaks on the northwest corner. Very little hotspots were found on the south side of HWF136, north of highway 58. 

There are currently 670 firefighters and support personnel, 24 helicopters and 130 pieces of heavy equipment working on the Semo Wildfire Complex.

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as out of control. Parks Canada estimates its size to be approximately 33,048 ha.

The priority is to establish a 100% containment status on the northwest perimeter of the fire that presents a risk to the townsite, which is currently 99% contained or controlled. The entire fire perimeter is 78% contained or controlled. A contained fire perimeter means that the fire is not likely to spread beyond existent or predetermined boundaries under prevailing and forecasted conditions. A controlled fire perimeter means that the fire is not expected to spread any further.

Forecast shows chances of showers later this week and this should allow crews to make progress in minimizing fire activity in other parts of the park.

Crews have extinguished hot spots south of the Palisades and north of the Jasper transfer station with the support of helicopter bucketing.

Crews working south of Maligne Road are stabilizing the fire by limiting the spread using natural fire breaks like rock features and the road. Crews in the Whirlpool area are working to cut off further spread to maintain habitat for caribou.

HWF136 is classified as out of control and is 6,352 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

Other fires in this complex are within or near the Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires are being held and are being monitored for growth and activity. 

Firefighters and heavy equipment continue to work along the southern perimeter of HWF061 to extinguish hotspots and reduce spread. Heavy equipment is also working on the west side, moving to the south as operators construct a containment line. The northeast side of HWF061 is seeing some fire activity, which we continue to monitor. This growth is not a concern, as the fire is moving north into the previously burnt area of HWF141. 

Construction of the guard on the northeast perimeter of HWF136 continues as equipment travels west to build containment lines. There is minimal activity on HWF136. Very few hotspots were found on the south side of HWF136, north of highway 58.

There are currently 711 firefighters and support personnel, 24 helicopters and 131 pieces of heavy equipment working on the Semo Wildfire Complex.

The priority remains the containment of the northwest perimeter of the fire that presents a risk to the townsite, which is 99 per cent contained or controlled. The Utopia Wildfire in the Miette area is extinguished.

Cooler temperature and some precipitation is expected this week which will allow crews to make progress in minimizing fire activity in the park. If conditions allow, fire crews will conduct ignition operations along the Jasper SkyTram Road to bring the wildfire down from the steep slope it is burning on to an area that is safe for fighters to work on. Specific criteria must be met for these operations to take place.

Crews are demobilizing equipment from around town and moving this equipment to the active fire burning south along Maligne Road, the southwest end of the fire in the Whirlpool areas and in key areas of the Athabasca Valley.

HWF136 is classified as out of control and is 6,352 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

Other fires in this complex are within or near the Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires are being held and are being monitored for growth and activity. 

Helicopters are not flying today due to poor visibility caused by smoke. Crews are accessing the fire by ground transportation. Firefighters and heavy equipment are working along the southern perimeter of HWF061 to extinguish hotspots and reduce spread when smoke allows. Heavy equipment is also on the west side moving to the south, as operators extend the containment line. Operators are also making progress around the spot fire south of the HWF061 and north of highway 58, working on the northwest perimeter to tie it into the main fire to the north. The north and northeast sides of HWF061 are seeing fire activity, which we continue to monitor (there are no concerns in these areas at this time).

Work on the guard on the northeast perimeter of HWF136 fire continues as equipment heads west to build containment lines. Crews and heavy equipment are working to tie in small excursions with natural fuel breaks on the northwest corner. Very few hotspots were found on the south side of HWF136.

There are currently 748 firefighters and support personnel, 24 helicopters and 129 pieces of heavy equipment working on the Semo Wildfire Complex.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfire ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 32,780 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

The northwest wildfire perimeter is now at 99 per cent contained. The fire around Kerkeslin Campground is now fully contained. Fire operations on the ground continue to be supported by helicopter bucketing operations. While containment efforts on the northern fire perimeter continue to make gains.

The park received rain overnight in the Maligne Valley area and Whistlers Mountain, however no rain was received in the valley bottom and vegetation remains dry. Twelve helicopters, including a long ranger, will conduct air operations today. On the ground, crews are removing downed trees around the Caribou Conservation Breeding facility. If conditions allow, fire crews will conduct ignition operations along the Jasper SkyTram Road to bring the wildfire down from the steep slope it is burning on to an area that is safe for fighters to work on. Ignition tactics are used to reduce fire spread by removing fuels, like downed trees and other dry vegetation, under controlled conditions. Specific criteria must be met for these operations to take place.

Miette, Snaring, and Snaring Overflow campgrounds have been assessed and are now safe to access for pick-up of items left behind during the evacuation. Campers who have equipment in these locations are being contacted to coordinate equipment retrieval. Once hazard trees and road conditions are assessed in other Parks Canada campgrounds and their access is deemed safe, visitors will be contacted to coordinate property retrieval. All campgrounds in Jasper National Park remain closed.

HWF136 is 6,340 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

HWF053 is approximately 709 ha in size and classified as being held. It is located directly above HWF061.

Other fires in this complex are within or nearby Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires will be monitored for growth and activity. HWF141, which is currently classified as being held north of HWF061 and east of HWF081, covering approximately 2,534 ha; HWF081, which is classified as being held and last estimated at 50,149 ha; and HWF083, which is classified as being held at 33,804 ha. 

Firefighters, heavy equipment and helicopters with bucketing capability are working along the southern perimeter of HWF061 to extinguish hotspots. Heavy equipment is also on the west side moving to the south as operators construct line. Operators are also making progress around the spot fire south of HWF061 and north of highway 58, working on the northwest perimeter to tie it into the main fire just to the north. The northwest side of HWF061 is seeing a lot of fire activity which we continue to monitor; there are no concerns in that area at this time. The southern perimeter continues to be the main priority.

Work on the guard on the northeast perimeter of HWF136 fire continues as they head west to build containment lines. There was an increase in activity on HWF136, but crews are working to tie in small excursions with natural fuel breaks on the northwest corner. Due to dry conditions, this is expected and crews will work with helicopters bucketing to cool any areas of spread.

There are over 750 firefighters and support staff, 24 helicopters and 137 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfire ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 32,780 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

The northwest wildfire perimeter is now at 89 per cent contained. Fire crews continue to focus on this area to gain control and secure this perimeter to fully eliminate the threat to the townsite, while patrols for hot spots in the containment area will continue. The wildfire at lakes Edith and Trefoil as well as the Jasper Park Lodge area is now classified as controlled. Fire crews will continue their fire suppression efforts and work to extinguish hot spots. Fire operations on the ground continue to be supported by helicopter bucketing operations. 

Yesterday’s planed ignition operation west of the SkyTram base was postponed due to unstable conditions. This operation is planned for today along with another ignition at the Jasper Airstrip area, provided conditions allow. These tactics are used to reduce fire spread by removing fuels, like downed trees and other dry vegetation. Specific criteria must be met for these operations to take place. If conditions allow for today’s operation by the airstrip, AB Highway 16 will be closed for approximately 3-4 hours this afternoon to ensure everyone’s safety. Firefighters, heavy equipment operators and helicopters with bucketing capability continue their efforts to extinguish hotspots on the southern perimeter of HWF061 and on the northwest corner of HWF136. These resources also continue to identify and extinguish hotspots and spot fires on the southern perimeter of HWF061 and the northwest perimeter of HWF136.

Work on the guard on the northeast perimeter of HWF136 fire continues as they head west to build containment lines. There was an increase in activity on HWF136, but crews are working to tie in small excursions with natural fuel breaks on the northwest corner. Due to dry conditions, this is expected and crews will work with helicopters bucketing to cool any areas of spread.

A red flag watch is in effect for the High Level and Fort Vermillion areas. 

There are over 600 firefighters and support staff, 45 helicopters and 112 pieces of heavy equipment working on this complex. An incident management team is overseeing operations.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfire ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 32,780 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

Yesterday provided a sizable win for all involved in achieving 80% containment of the northwest perimeter at the wildfire. Further risks to the Municipality of Jasper have been significantly reduced thanks to the hard work and dedication of amazing firefighters and other fire specialists from around the country. Overnight infrared scanning operations were completed using drones to identify hot spots in uncontained areas. Crews will focus further on these areas in the coming days. While there is significant containment on the northern fire perimeter near the townsite, the wildfire remains classified out of control.

Today, fire crews will continue extinguishing hot spots and fire suppression efforts in the Palisades area, supported by helicopter bucketing operations. Patrols for hot spots are ongoing south of the Transfer Station, between the highway and railway, and along Marmot Road. A small-scale tactical ignition, supported by bucketing operations, is planned for today by the base of the SkyTram, provided conditions allow. These tactics are conducted to reduce further risks of wildfire spread, by controlling burn fuels occurring naturally on the landscape, such as dry vegetation like downed trees and scattered brush and branches. Crews will also be at the Kerkeslin Campground area working to extinguish and contain the fire there.

Intense fire activity in the initial days of the wildfire slowed down the ability for firefighters to access Maligne Lake. Of the many structures found in the Maligne Canyon area, some of the more prominent ones destroyed by the fire include the Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen, and all structures at the Maligne Wilderness Hostel. The Maligne Lake Boat House still stands, as well as the structures in the Maligne Lake area.

HWF141, which is currently classified as 'being held' north of HWF061 and east of HWF081, covering approximately 2,450 ha; HWF081, which is classified as 'being held' and last estimated at 50,081 ha; and HWF083, which is classified as 'being held' at 33,740 ha. 

Firefighters, heavy equipment operators and helicopters with bucketing capability continue their efforts to extinguish hotspots on the southern perimeter of HWF061 and on the northwest corner of HWF136. These resources also continue to identify and extinguish hotspots and spot fires on the southern perimeter of HWF061 and the northwest perimeter of HWF136.

Heavy equipment operators will continue to work on the guard heading east along the south perimeter of HWF061. Heavy equipment is also making progress around the spot fire directly south of HWF061. The northwest side of HWF061 saw increased fire activity yesterday, which we continue to monitor. The southern perimeter continues to be the main priority.

There are two wildfires of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfire ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 32,780 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

Cool, wet weather earlier this week allowed crews to make great gains in minimalizing fire activity, although yesterday saw some increase in intensity. Yesterday, crews responded to areas where previously smoldering fires resurfaced. Air and ground operations continue to work in tandem on fire suppression efforts, while focusing on the safe return of residents.

The Municipality of Jasper continues to make visual progress and crews have made great strides in reconnecting gas, water and electricity to essential facilities and some residential blocks.

AB Highway 16 opened to all traffic on August 9. The highway is open to all east and westbound traffic daily from 7 am to 9 pm (MT). Times and access are subject to change without notice and are dependent on fire behaviour and operational needs. There are no available services between Hinton and Mount Robson. 

Alberta Wildfire is assisting Parks Canada with the Jasper Wildfire Complex by providing firefighters, support staff heavy equipment and helicopters.

HCX001 - Semo Complex 

Wildfires HWF053, HWF061, HWF081, HWF083, HWF136 and HWF141 are part of the Semo Complex. All of these wildfires are out of control.

HWF061 is the largest wildfire in the complex and is 97,526 ha in size. It is located 19 km northeast of John D'or Prairie, 15 km north of Fox Lake and 1.9 km north of Highway 58. It was caused by lightning.

HWF136 is 6,134 ha in size. It is located north of highway 58 and approximately 13 km northwest of Garden River.

HWF053 is approximately 709 ha in size. It is located directly above HWF061.

Other fires in this complex are within or nearby Caribou Mountain Wildland Provincial Park. These fires will be monitored for growth and activity.

A substantial amount of work has been done on the southern end of HWF061; the guard has been completed from 2km west of Foggy Tower Road heading eastward, past the Wentzel River and halfway through the perimeter in between the main fire and the spot fire closest to Highway 58. Heavy equipment will be continuing this guard heading east. The guard on the east side of the fire is continuing, heading south, to eventually meet up with the heavy equipment group previously mentioned on the southern perimeter.

Heavy equipment is also making progress around the spot fire, working on the northern perimeter heading west, as well as rounding the west side going east. The northwest side of HWF061 is seeing a lot of fire activity which we continue to monitor; there are no concerns in that area. The southern perimeter continues to be the main priority.

Progress is being made in the areas of the Palisades Centre and Pyramid Lake Lodge and work in that area is ongoing. Crews will continue patrols for hot spots from south if Moberly Bridge and areas between lakes Annette and Trefoil. Hot spots are also being extinguished within 30m of Kerkeslin Campground, the Athabasca Falls area and Cavell Station.

Visible progress in the Municipality of Jasper continues as crews work diligently in preparing for the resumption of essential services and the safe return of residents. Hazard mitigation and debris removal within the townsite is ongoing and utilities crews are making headway in reconnecting gas, water, and electricity to essential facilities, as well as some residential blocks.

Heavy equipment work on private property is only taking place to address an immediate public safety hazard. For example: an unstable chimney, tree or partial wall that could fall over. These are hazards that would otherwise prevent a homeowner, or an insurance adjuster from entering the site at all. Crews are not sifting through or removing any debris on private property.

Alberta Wildfire is assisting Parks Canada with the Jasper Wildfire Complex by providing firefighters, heavy equipment and a helicopter.

Jasper Wildfire Complex

Wildfire ANP002 (formally ANP002 and ANP003) is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and Parks Canada is reporting the size to be 34,000 ha. The north and south fires both spread towards the Jasper townsite and have merged together.

Little to no precipitation is expected today but cooler conditions should help slow the spread of the wildfire ad keep the fire behavior lower. Crews have continued to make good progress on keeping the fire spread minimal. Clean up of debris and removal of damaged vehicles is underway in areas that have been secured. 

As clean up and restoration plans progress in the townsite, re-entry plans for residents continue to advance with priority on resumption of essential services. Clean up and removal of hazards is making visible gains, while damage assessments and facilities’ readiness is ongoing. 

Crews made progress in maintaining and protecting critical infrastructure and utilities inside and outside of the Jasper townsite. Firefighters are continuing to put out hot spots. They’re also implementing structural protection on facilities within 15 km of the active fire perimeter. Structure protection that had been set up in the Miette Hot Springs area due to the Utopia wildfire was taken down.

Alberta Wildfire is assisting Parks Canada with the Jasper Wildfire Complex by providing firefighters, heavy equipment and a helicopter.

The Kiska Complex, which includes wildfires RWF062, RWF063 and RWF064, was designated a wildfire of note on August 1 after smoke from wildfires in the area resulted in the closure of a portion of the Forestry Trunk Road.

This wildfire is now classified as "being held" and will no longer show up on wildfires of note.
