There is one wildfire of note in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta.
MCX002
There are several wildfires near the Firebag River that are all being managed together under the MCX002. This includes MWF046, MWF047, MWF048, MWF051, MWF052, MWF053, MWF054 and MWF055. All of these wildfires are classified as being held, except for MWF047.
MWF047 is the largest wildfire of this complex, which is approximately 2,119 ha in size and is classified as out of control. This wildfire is approximately 8 km northeast of area infrastructure, about 50 km northeast Fort McKay and 70 km northeast of Fort McMurray.
Currently, we have 36 firefighters, nine helicopters, three pieces of heavy equipment and five overhead staff working on this complex, with more resources coming to assist with wildfire operations.
One crew is working to secure the perimeter of MWF047. Firefighters are working on areas of the wildfire that are closest to infrastructure. Other crews are working to extinguish smaller wildfires that are burning nearby.
Yesterday, there was significant fire growth towards the south with the fire showing intense activity. Airtankers worked early yesterday morning to help slow fire growth. A night vision enable helicopter worked overnight.
Today we expect a high of 28 C and a relative humidity of 30 per cent. Wind is forecasted to be coming from the west at 15-20 km/h, gusting up to 35 km/h, which should push the wildfire towards the east.
We expect a challenging firefighting day in the afternoon and early evening today. Once the relative humidity drops and the temperature increases, we expect to see more extreme fire activity today.
A wildfire of note is determined to be of significant public interest and may pose a threat to public safety, communities or critical infrastructure.
Wildfires of note do not typically include mutual aid wildfires located outside of the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Alberta Wildfire provides assistance on a mutual aid wildfire but is not the lead agency.
