Wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Slave Lake Forest Area has climbed to VERY HIGH.

Firefighters urge everyone to use caution when working or recreating in the outdoors, as areas of dead dry grass will ignite easily and under the windy conditions, a fire will spread rapidly.

Report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).Fire Lookouts are on high alert, watching for smoke and firefighters with helicopters and heavy equipment are ready to respond to any new wildfires that start.

Weather

Today's forecast is calling for a high of 15-16 degrees and winds will be from the northwest 20 kilometres per hour gusting up to 35.

NOTE: Areas of the map that are white mean there is still snow on the ground. Once snow free conditions occur the wildfire danger will be visible on the map.

Since April 18th, a fire restriction has been in place for the Slave Lake Forest Area, suspending all fire permits and prohibiting campfires in random camping areas or backcountry.

Over the weekend, two tickets were issued for $600 each for violating the fire restriction. One person was burning without a fire permit and the other had a campfire in an undesignated area and failed to properly extinguish the campfire, leaving it smoldering.

Current wildfire situation

There were three new wildfires yesterday.

SWF026 was an abandoned campfire located in the Jack Pines by Slave Lake.

SWF027 was detected by Marten Mountain Fire Lookout yesterday afternoon and is located between Canyon Creek and Widewater. The wildfire remains being held at an estimated 3.0 hectares. Being held means the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries given the current weather and firefighting resources. 17 firefighters with two water trucks are making good progress on containing the wildfire. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation.

SWF028 was a grass fire located seven kilometres southeast of Enilda. The wildfire was 0.5 hectares and has been extinguished.

Since January 1, 2024, 28 wildfires have been reported in the Slave Lake Forest Area, resulting in a total burned area of 283.77 hectares. Of the 28 wildfires, one is being held, four are under control, two have been turned over to the landowner and 21 have been extinguished.

In the Slave Lake Forest Area, eight wildfires from the 2023 wildfire season remain under control.

Since January 1, 2024, 185 wildfires have been reported in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, resulting in a total burned area of 739.39 hectares.

Prevent wildfires

Do your part to prevent wildfires this spring.

When riding your off-highway vehicle, stop frequently to remove any build-up of debris from your machine. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can begin to smoulder and drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire. Always carry firefighting equipment such as a shovel, extinguisher and bucket when you ride.

When having a campfire, keep it small, safe and always attended. When you are leaving the site or going to bed, your campfire must be extinguished. Soak it, stir up the ashes, soak it again to ensure it is out. A campfire is out when you can no longer feel heat from the ashes.
