Ignition operations on the Blackstone prescribed fire, 40 kms. northwest of Nordegg, are scheduled to commence this Friday May 19th, pending favorable weather and on-the-ground conditions.

The objective is to improve ungulate habitat by reducing shrub encroachment and reinvigorating grass growth. We will proceed when and where we can ensure a safe operation that will meet the overall objectives of the prescribed fire.

The adjacent area will be closed to the public from May 19-31.  PRES_Blackstone_Hubspot.jpg

Prescribed fires are the proactive, knowledgeable and controlled applications of fire to accomplish well-defined resource management objectives. These fires are applied under select weather conditions and managed to minimize risk and maximize the benefits to the site.

Prescribed fire supports FireSmart principles that reduce wildfire threat to Albertans and their communities by reducing the likelihood of large uncontrollable wildfires while creating a healthier forest. Click to learn about the importance of wildfire.
