Grande Prairie Area Wildfire Update- September 6, 2021

Posted on Mon, Sep 06, 2021

The Wildfire Danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is HIGH.

Please use caution in forested areas as warm temperatures and gusty winds can create conditions that are favorable for a wildfire. Last year 88 per cent of wildfires were human-caused, meaning most wildfires are preventable. Take extra caution when working or recreating in forested areas that have abundant grass and dry vegetation. Keep watch of your surroundings and ensure you have a collapsible shovel and water available.

Wildfire Situation

Since March 1, 2021 there have been 97 wildfires burning nearly 132 hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area, all fires are now extinguished.  For a map and more information on the current wildfire situation across the province of Alberta visit

Fire Permits

From March 1st until October 31st, fire permits are required for any burning except campfires in the Forest Protection Area (FPA). If you live within the FPA, please contact your local forestry office. Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
