The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is MODERATE. If you spot smoke or fire in the forest report it by calling 310-FIRE (3743).

Wildfire Situation

Since January 1, 2022 there have been 21 wildfires burning nearly seven hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

There are currently four active wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. Two are classified as being held and two are under control.

When travelling on an off highway vehicle (OHV) stop regularly and check around the exhaust and wheel wells for any buildup of flammable material, especially after passing through tall grass or muskeg. When traveling through the Forest Protection Area during the fire season, carry a shovel or an axe and a receptacle of at least 5 litres liquid capacity.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY

We urge everyone to use caution when working and recreating outdoors. Never leave your campfire unattended.

• Never leave your campfire unattended! Always ensure it is properly extinguished when you are done with it. Soak it with water, stir it and soak it again until the ashes are cool to the touch.

• Let the fire burn down before you plan on putting it out. Spread the embers within the fire pit, then add water or loose dirt, and stir.

• Expose any material still burning. Add more water and stir again until you can no longer see smoke or steam. Do not bury your fire as the embers may continue to smolder and can re-emerge as a wildfire.

• Repeat until your campfire is cool to the touch.

• If your fire is out, you should not be able to feel any heat from the ashes.

Before you burn it get a permit 

During fire season, from March 1st to October 31st, a fire permit is required for any type of outdoor burning in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta with the exception of a campfire for cooking or warming. Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area (FPA) of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the online Fire Permit Portal.
