Grande Prairie Area Update November 1, 2023

Posted on Wed, Nov 01, 2023

Today marks the end of the 2023 wildfire season.

end of wildfire season 2023

Wildfire season officially ends on October 31, but safe burning practices are always in season. From November 1 to March 1, fire permits are no longer required for burning in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. However, you are still responsible for any burning after wildfire season ends and extinguishing those winter burns.

While the risk of starting a wildfire may be low, holdover fires can happen. Holdover fires or ground fires often start during the fall and winter months as a result of improperly extinguished fires. This type of fire burns without smoke or flame and smolders underground over the winter.

If you are planning on doing any large burning projects, it is important to check with your local municipality or county as many have winter burning bylaws and notification systems in place that can help monitor smoke and prevent an unnecessary emergency response.
