The wildfire danger is HIGH for the Grande Prairie Forest Area.
Wildfire Situation | October 10, 2023 - 3:30 p.m.
Since March 1, 2023 there have been 73 wildfires burning nearly 141,417 hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. A fire advisory is in effect and will remain until we see significant precipitation and cooler temperatures.
The wildfire season in Alberta officially ends on October 31, 2023. Although we are starting to experience cool fall weather, it is important to continue to do your part to prevent wildfires. Over the upcoming weeks, areas of grass will dry out and become flammable. Firefighters urge everyone to use caution when working or recreating in grassy areas.
Due to wildfire activity in Alberta, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, smoky conditions may occur. Visit www.firesmoke.ca to see where the smoke is coming from. Anyone with health concerns should visit Alberta Health Services or call 811 for health advice from Alberta Health Link.

Assistance from the public plays a vital role in detecting wildfires on the landscape. Calling 310-FIRE is available toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you see a wildfire or suspicious smoke – regardless of where or when it happens – please make the call. The 310-FIRE line was created as a means for the public to report wildfires in the forested areas. If you see fire threatening a community, call 911 immediately.
Fire Permits
Before you burn it, get a fire permit. Until October 31st, fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area (FPA). The only exception is for a cooking or warming campfire. Fire permits help us to track what is burning on the landscape. If you're burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire. Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the new, convenient online Fire Permit Portal.
