The wildfire danger is VERY HIGH for the Grande Prairie Forest Area
Wildfire Situation | October 6, 2023 - 4:00 p.m.
Since March 1, 2023 there have been 70 wildfires burning nearly 141,417 hectares in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.
Strong shifting southeast winds of gusting to 40-50 km/h, are expected in the area overnight. Windy conditions can contribute to the spread of fires by carrying burning debris and embers over long distances, which can ignite new fires far from the original source. Fires in areas with plenty of dry vegetation, such as in a mature grassland or on a forest floor, will be difficult to control under windy conditions.

Long Weekend Wildfire Prevention
-
Never leave a campfire unattended, always take the time to properly extinguish your campfire. Soak the fire with water stir up the ashes and soak it until no heat can be felt. Hunters should always carry a shovel and water pail to put out any campfires they see left unattended.
-
Be careful with all motorized equipment, a build-up of dry grass and vegetation around the exhaust and engine hot spots can smolder and fall off into dry grass starting a wildfire.
-
Be on the lookout for fires. To report a wildfire call 310-FIRE or #FIRE on your cellular phone.
Fire Permits
Before you burn it, get a fire permit. Until October 31st, fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area (FPA). The only exception is for a cooking or warming campfire. Fire permits help us to track what is burning on the landscape. If you're burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire. Anyone living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the new, convenient online Fire Permit Portal.
