Due to the current dry grass, warm weather and possible windy conditions, there is an increased risk of wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. We urge residents and visitors to exercise caution and take steps to prevent wildfire.

  • Do not start any fires or use open flames in areas that are susceptible to catching fire, such as near dry vegetation like grass or wooded areas.
  • Dispose of cigarettes and other smoking materials properly, do not throw them on the ground.
  • If you see a wildfire, immediately call 310-FIRE (3473) and report the location of the fire.
  • Avoid using equipment that could generate sparks, friction or flames, such as power tools or lawn mowers, in areas with dry vegetation.
  • Ensure grinders and welders are properly maintained and used in areas that are free from dry vegetation.
  • Have sufficient water and tools on hand. Always keep watch of your surroundings and look around at regular intervals for smoke or flames that may have been accidently ignited.
  • By working together and taking proactive steps, we can help reduce the risk of wildfires in our community.

Fire Advisory banner

A fire advisory is in effect for the Grande Prairie Forest Area section of the Forest Protection Area due to drying conditions and high wind.

Under this advisory:
•    Existing fire permits are still valid.
•    New permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, only for essential burning.

Prohibited:
•    Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire.

Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.

When operating equipment, clear debris from moving parts, check your muffler and keep equipment in good repair. Do not operate equipment in tall grass. Keep watch of your surroundings and ensure you have sufficient firefighting equipment and water available. Equipment fires or work-related sparks, friction and hot exhaust can cause even small amounts of dry fuels to ignite into a wildfire.

The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.

Thank you for doing your part to prevent wildfires, if you spot a wildfire call 310-FIRE (3473)

When travelling on an off highway vehicle (OHV) stop regularly and check around the exhaust and wheel wells for any buildup of flammable material, especially after passing through tall grass or muskeg. When traveling through the Forest Protection Area during the fire season, carry a shovel or an axe and a receptacle of at least 5 litres liquid capacity.
