The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is HIGH. If you spot smoke or fire in the forest report it by calling 310-FIRE (3743).
Under this advisory:
• Existing fire permits are still valid.
• New permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, only for essential burning.
Prohibited:
• Any burning without a valid fire permit, other than a campfire.
Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.
When operating equipment, clear debris from moving parts, check your muffler and keep equipment in good repair. Do not operate equipment in tall grass. Keep watch of your surroundings and ensure you have sufficient firefighting equipment and water available. Equipment fires or work-related sparks, friction and hot exhaust can cause even small amounts of dry fuels to ignite into a wildfire.
If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE
The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve.
Wildfire Situation | April 28, 2023
Since January 1, 2023, there have been 10 wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area burning nearly 58 hectares. At this time, eight of these fires have been extinguished, one is under control, and one has been turned over to the responsible party for extinguishment.

In the spring, go back and check your fall and winter burns to make sure they are extinguished. Soak the ashes with water, stir them and soak them again. Make sure all burn piles are fully extinguished by feeling for heat. Burn sites can smoulder underground and resurface in the spring as a wildfire.

When travelling on an off highway vehicle (OHV) stop regularly and check around the exhaust and wheel wells for any buildup of flammable material, especially after passing through tall grass or muskeg. When traveling through the Forest Protection Area during the fire season, carry a shovel or an axe and a receptacle of at least 5 litres liquid capacity.
