The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is now HIGH.
Wildfire Situation | April 26, 2023
Since January 1, 2023, there has been eight wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area burning 56.5 hectares. At this time, five of these fires have been extinguished and one is listed as under control, all others have been turned over to the responsible party for extinguishment.
GWF 084 is a 2022 carryover fire, it is listed as under control.
GWF 006 was started from a winter holdover. Improperly extinguished fires can flash back to life on windy days. To check your burn sites for holdover, spread out remaining ash and probe the area for hot spots. Using your hand, feel for heat over the ash pile. If you see smoke or feel heat, the fire is still burning beneath the surface. Drench any remaining hot spots with water and stir up the ashes.

Fire Permits
Fire permits are now required for burning within the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires.
If you are burning without a permit or not following permit conditions, your fire could be considered a wildfire and you could be fined and may be responsible for the costs of suppressing the fire. By getting a fire permit, you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of responding to the smoke in your backyard.
Fire permits are free and now available online or call:
County West / Grovedale - (780) 814-1648
Spirit River – (780) 814-1983
Valleyview – (780) 524-6576
