Wind-driven springtime wildfires are of concern for the next several weeks. Warmer weather has caused the snow to disappear quickly leaving areas of dry exposed grass. Fine fuels like dead grass can ignite easily and fire will spread quickly, even under light winds.

Wildfire Situation | April 26, 2023

Since January 1, 2023, there has been eight wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area burning 56.5 hectares. At this time, five of these fires have been extinguished and one is listed as under control all others have been turned over to the responsible party for extinguishment.

GWF 084 is a 2022 carryover fire, it is listed as under control, all other fires are extinguished. For information on the wildfire situation across the province of Alberta visit Alberta Wildfire status.

Fire Permits

Fire permits are now required for burning within the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires.

If you are burning without a permit or not following permit conditions, your fire could be considered a wildfire and you could be fined and may be responsible for the costs of suppressing the fire. By getting a fire permit, you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of responding to the smoke in your backyard.

Fire permits are free and now available online or call:

Grande Prairie / County West / Grovedale - (780) 814-1648

Spirit River – (780) 814-1983

Valleyview – (780) 524-6576

Prevent Wildfires

Over 60 per cent of wildfires last year were human-caused. We all play an active role in preventing wildfires. A fire lit in the winter, if not extinguished properly can burn underground all winter long and could re-emerge in the spring when conditions are dry and windy. Check all winter burn sites for heat.

Before starting work each day, check local fire restrictions and adjust or postpone operations as necessary. When riding your off-highway vehicle (OHV), stop frequently to remove the buildup of debris around your vehicle’s hot spots and carry firefighting equipment like a shovel, pail and extinguisher on your OHV when riding around.

Report a wildfire call 310-FIRE (3473) or #FIRE on your cell phone
