The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is MODERATE.  Check winter burn sites, improperly extinguished fires can holdover and come back to life, especially when it's windy.

Hazard Reduction Burning - Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation

Hazard reduction burning in the community of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has been favorable and they have burned nearly 32 hectares since April 13, 2023. Burning is an efficient way to remove dead dry grass. Spring hazard reduction burning can lessen the risk of human caused wildfires and help protect homes and the community from future wildfires. Removing fine fuel loading along ditches, open fields, OHV trails and other recreation areas is another step in making this community FireSmart. Burning will continue until weather permits or the burn is complete.

Fire Permits

Fire permits are now required for burning within the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires.

If you are burning without a permit or not following permit conditions, your fire could be considered a wildfire and you could be fined and may be responsible for the costs of suppressing the fire. By getting a fire permit, you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of responding to the smoke in your backyard.

Fire permits are free and now available online. Visit firepermits.alberta.ca to request yours or call:

Grande Prairie / County West / Grovedale - (780) 814-1648

Spirit River – (780) 814-1983

Valleyview – (780) 524-6576

Check Your Winter Burns

With the dry conditions last fall and lack of moisture in the ground, there is potential for fires lit this winter to continue to burn under the snow and re-emerge as wildfires in the spring.

To prevent spring holdover wildfires revisit your brush pile or windrow burning projects to ensure the fires are extinguished.

  • Spread out the remaining material.
  • Soak the area and ensure both heat and smoke are no longer being produced.
  • Check your burn site multiple times in the coming weeks to ensure it has not reignited.
