The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is LOW. Cool temperatures and current snow levels will temporarily keep the wildfire danger low. Spring wildfire danger is dependent on snow levels and spring rainfall amounts. To help prevent spring wildfires, we ask all Albertans to revisit their fall and winter burns and make sure they are extinguished.

Wildfire Situation | March 17, 2023

Since January 1, 2023, there has been one wildfire in the Grande Prairie Forest Area burning a total of 0.96 hectares.
At this time, wildfire GWF 084 and GWF 085 are carry over fires from the 2022 wildfire season, both are listed as under control. For information about wildfire in Alberta visit  Alberta Wildfire Status.

Check Your Winter Burns

With the dry conditions last fall and lack of moisture in the ground, there is potential for fires lit this winter to continue to burn under the snow and re-emerge as wildfires in the spring.

To prevent spring holdover wildfires revisit your brush pile or windrow burning projects to ensure the fires are extinguished.

  • Spread out the remaining material.
  • Soak the area and ensure both heat and smoke are no longer being produced.
  • Check your burn site multiple times in the coming weeks to ensure it has not reignited.

To report a wildfire call 310-FIRE (3473).
