The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is MODERATE.

Widespread rain has brought relief to the wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area.

The County of Grande Prairie as well as the City of Grande Prairie  have lifted the fire ban and are now under restrictions. A fire ban remains in place for the Grande Prairie Forest  Protection Area. View all current fire restrictions and bans in place across the province at www.albertafirebans.ca

Wildfire danger is based on a number of factors, like the moisture content of fine fuels such as leaves, needles and small twigs. In Alberta, the hazard is historically highest in the spring months after the snow has melted and the moisture evaporated, before trees and grass have started growing. The fire season is therefore divided into three periods spring, summer and fall.

This week, the Grande Prairie Forest Area has begun to experience that  growing *green up process. Green up, a term used by the wildfire crews to indicate a change in moisture content of the grass and leafing out of the trees. The fire season is moving from the spring hazard of dead dry grass into summer. At this time of year, lightning fires are common. It's important now to be extra careful with fire and limit the number of human caused wildfires.

To report wildfires call 310-FIRE(3473).
