Whitecourt Forest Area Wildfire Update

The wildfire danger for the Whitecourt Forest Area is MODERATE.

Warm weather and winds can quickly dry vegetation and increase fire danger. If you see smoke or flames in the forest, call 310-FIRE (2473) to report it.

WHITECOURT FOREST AREA UPDATE

Since January 1, 2023, there have been 54 wildfires in the Whitecourt Forest Area, burning approximately 66,571 hectares (ha).

EXPLODING TARGETS

The use of exploding targets is prohibited in the Forest Protection Area without written permission from a Forest Officer. Written permission is required year-round.

Exploding targets can cause a wildfire. If you would like to use exploding targets in the Whitecourt Forest Area you must get permission. Anyone interested in written permission can call 780-778-7166 for more information or to request permission.

Exhaust systems heat up to temperatures in excess of 200°C. At these temperatures, built up materials and debris on your machine (such as grass, muskeg, moss) can heat up, smoulder and ignite. Smouldering debris can drop to the ground as you are riding, starting a wildfire.

HUNTING SEASON

Hunting season has begun in areas across Alberta. Hunters please ensure warming and cooking fires are completely extinguished. Keep campfires in safe, non-combustible soils and when you're done with the campfire remember to soak it, stir it and soak it again until it's cool to the touch.

WILDFIRE PREVENTION TIPS

Albertans are always asked to use caution when working or recreating in the outdoors:

Before you burn it, get your fire permit. Fire permits in Alberta.
Clear debris from hot spots on your off-highway vehicle.
Ensure your campfire is out - soak it, stir it, soak it again.
Before heading out, please check albertafirebans.ca to determine whether there are any fire advisories, fire restrictions or fire bans in effect for your destination.

PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE UPDATE

Since January 1, there have been 998 wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, burning a total of 1,970,150.92 ha.
