Wildfire Hazard

Areas north of Lesser Slave Lake did not receive any rain over the weekend therefore the wildfire hazard for the north is HIGH. Areas around and south of Lesser Slave Lake are at a moderate wildfire hazard.

Weather Forecast

For today, areas to the north will see strong, gusty winds from the NE.  These conditions will cause wildfires to spread quickly through areas of dry grass.  The forecast for Tuesday is calling for cool temperatures, with a high chance of rain and snow, and brisk winds from the NE 20 gusting up to 4 kilometers per hour.  Until the rain or snow actually falls to the ground, ground conditions will remain dry, increasing the likelihood of fast moving wildfires.

Wildfire Report as of May 4 11:30 am

There were 2 new wildfires over the weekend.  They were quickly contained and have been extinguished and burned 2.00 hectares.

Since April 1, the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area has recorded 37 wildfires which have burned 307.24 hectares. 36 wildfires have been extinguished and one has been turned over to the land owner that is responsible to extinguish the fire.

Fire Permits

All fire permit holders are reminded to check the weather and your permit conditions. If you cannot meet the conditions on your permit, do not ignite new burns and extinguish those already burning.

From March 1 to October 31, Albertans in the forested areas need to get a FIRE PERMIT for any burning, excluding campfires. To request your free fire permit call your local Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Office.
