Wildfire hazard climbs to moderate. Wildfire west of Chipewyan Lakes is being held.

Firefighters continue to work on the wildfire along highway 754. For the safety of our firefighting personnel, please slow down and follow the posted speed limits.

 

Wildfire Hazard

Warm temperatures expected for tomorrow will cause the wildfire hazard to climb to MODERATE for the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area.

Wildfire Update as of 4:30 pm July 23, 2015

In the last 24 hours there has been no new wildfires.

Recent rain and cool weather has aided firefighters in containing the wildfires in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area.

Slave Lake Wildfire number 175 was discovered on July 1st and is located 36 kilometers northeast of Peerless Lake and 33 kilometers west of Chipewyan Lakes.Today, firefighters have declared that this wildfire is being held at 8386 hectares. Being held means, given current weather conditions and firefighting resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries.Firefighters using heavy equipment and helicopters are working on extinguishing hotspots along the edges of this wildfire.

Slave Lake Wildfire number 163 which is located at approximately kilometer 25 on highway 754, 26 kilometers northeast of Marten Beach remains being held at 9,895 hectares. Being held means, given current weather conditions and firefighting resources, the wildfire is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries. This wildfire is 95 % contained and firefighters using heavy equipment and helicopters continue to work on extinguishing hotspots and securing the edges of this wildfire. 

Slave Lake Wildfire number 140 was caused by lightning on June 30th and is located 60 kilometres north of Red Earth Creek. Today, firefighters have declared that this wildfire is under control at 1916 hectares. Firefighters continue to patrol this wildfire and extinguish smoldering ground fires. 

Slave Lake Wildfire number 211 is located approximately 80 kilometres northwest of Red Earth Creek. Yesterday, firefighters declared that this wildfire is under control at 473.3 hectares.Firefighters continue to patrol this wildfire and extinguish smoldering ground fires. 

Weather Forecast

The forecast for tomorrow is calling for temperatures in mid twenties and winds from the south/southeast at 20 kilometres per hour.  For the weekend widespread rain showers are expected.

Since April 1, in the Slave Lake Wildfire Management Area there have been 225 wildfires that have burned a total of 22,322.9  hectares.

Fire Permits

From March 1 to October 31, fire permits are required for any type of burning in the forest protection area - except campfires. 

To request your free fire permit call your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Office.
