RCX001 - KISKA COMPLEX (RWF064, RWF063 and RWF062)

The Kiska Complex is located west (RWF063 and RWF062) and southwest (RWF064) of Nordegg. All of the wildfires in this complex were caused by lightning

RWF064 remains classified as OUT OF CONTROL and is 12 km northwest of the Ram Falls Provincial Park boundary and 25 km south of Nordegg. This wildfire is now estimated to be 6,996 ha in size.

RWF063 is classified as BEING HELD which means that means this fire is not expected to grow beyond certain boundaries under the current conditions. It is located approximately 17 km west of fire RWF062 and 50 km west of Nordegg. This wildfire is estimated to be 1,962 ha in size. This wildfire has shown very little activity throughout the week.

RWF062 is classified as OUT OF CONTROL and is located approximately 5 km north of the Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area (PRA), 9 km northwest from the Bighorn First Nation and 20 km west of Nordegg. This wildfire is now estimated to be 4,936 ha in size.

There are 39 firefighters, seven helicopters and 38 pieces of heavy equipment assigned to the Kiska Complex to support suppression efforts.

Firefighters and heavy equipment worked throughout the day to begin building containment lines along the eastern perimeter of RWF064 where it crossed the Forestry Trunk Road. Helicopters are supporting suppression efforts with strategic bucketing operations. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, airtankers were not effective today but will be requested if conditions allow. Heavy equipment will continue operations overnight working to reinforce the containment lines that were established throughout the day and focusing on utilizing natural features to limit spread.

Some parts of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area observed brief, intermittent rain and thunderstorms throughout the day. RWF064 and RWF062 received no significant precipitation, both are expected to receive rain beginning on Sunday and continuing throughout the week.

  • Barbeque charcoal briquettes.

LONG WEEKEND MESSAGE

Alberta Wildfire would like to remind anyone heading out to our forested areas to be responsible. Many areas of the province are under fire advisories, restrictions, and bans. Make sure to check the area you are going to ensure fires are permitted and be prepared if they are not. Propane fire pits are still allowed during a fire ban but wood burning fires are not.

The wildfire danger is growing in the province so be on high alert. To report wildfires in the province’s forested areas, call 310-FIRE (3473).

OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES

Off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is allowed in the Forest Protection Area. To stay in the know of fire ban information please visit Alberta Fire Bans. We strongly encourage you to research the local regulations in the area you would like to ride in, before heading out.

If you are riding your OHV in forested areas please ensure you stop often and check your hotspots. Vegetation can build up in certain areas on your machine, as the material heats up, it can drop off and start a wildfire as you ride away.

Avoid idling on tall, dry grass and always carry firefighting equipment with you. Fire fighting equipment can include things like a shovel, fire extinguisher or a small water tank. For more information, visit off-highway vehicle safety.
