The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is VERY HIGH.
A FIRE RESTRICTION is in effect for most of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area.
A fire restriction is in effect for all of the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, excluding the Calgary Forest Area.
Under this restriction:
- Existing fire permits are restricted, suspended or cancelled and no new fire permits will be issued.
- Safe wood campfires within fire rings in campgrounds are allowed.
Prohibited on public lands, including backcountry and random camping areas:
- All outdoor wood fires.
- Fires fueled exclusively by charcoal briquettes.
- The use of fireworks and exploding targets.
Allowed in designated campgrounds on private and public land, designated day use areas and on privately owned land:
- Safe wood campfires.
- Backyard fire pits, charcoal briquette barbeques.
- Propane/ natural gas-powered appliances CSA approved or UL certified.
Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until cool to the touch to ensure it is extinguished.
If you see a wildfire, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE.

Wildfire Prevention
We all have a role to play in preventing wildfires. Make sure to do your part.
If riding an off-highway vehicle, stop frequently to check your hotspots for build-up of debris. Debris from your machine can smoulder and drop to the ground while you're riding, which can start a wildfire. Ensure that you are always carrying firefighting equipment such as a shovel, extinguisher and bucket when you ride.
If you are planning to have a campfire do so safety and remember to properly extinguish it when you are done. Soak the ashes, stir them, and soak them again until they are cool to the touch. Never leave your campfire unattended.
Wildfire update
Since January 1, 2024, there have been seven wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area burning 2.7 hectares.
There are currently three wildfires burning in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Two are carryover fires from the 2023 wildfire season. All three wildfires are under control.
