Rocky Mountain House Forest Area Wildfire Update - May 06 PM UPDATE

The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area remains VERY HIGH. 

Report smoke or fire in the forest by calling 310-FIRE (3473). 


A FIRE BAN and OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLE RESTRICTION is now effect for the entire Forest Protection Area of Alberta, including the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area

A fire ban and off-highway vehicle restriction is in effect for the entire Forest Protection Area of Alberta, including the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, due to a very high fire hazard. Visit AlbertaFireBans.ca to see the restriction boundary.
 
Under this ban:
  • All existing fire permits are suspended (or cancelled)
  • No new fire permits will be issued
Prohibited:
  • All outdoor wood fires are banned, including wood campfires on public lands, wood campfires on private land and provincial campgrounds
  • Backyard firepits
  • BBQ charcoal briquettes
  • The use of fireworks and exploding targets
  • The recreational use of off-highway vehicles (OHV) on public lands, including designated OHV trails
 
Allowed:
  • Propane/natural gas-powered appliances
  • Open flame oil devices (e.g., turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
  • Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
  • All appliances must be CSA approved and used per manufacturer’s standards
  • Indigenous people when using an OHV for traditional purposes. Traditional purposes are hunting, fishing, and trapping – including the use of an OHV to travel to the location(s) for these purposes.
  • Essential industry-related activities requiring the use of OHVs.
  • Off-highway vehicle use is still permitted on private lands.

The fire ban and OHV restriction will remain in effect until conditions improve.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOUSE FOREST AREA UPDATE

There are currently 15 wildfires burning in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area. Four of these wildfire are OUT OF CONTROL, two are being held, and nine are classified as under control. Since January 1, 2023 there have been 42 wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, burning a total of 70,000.81 hectares (ha).


ACTIVE WILDFIRES

RCU005 - This wildfire is located just outside Drayton Valley. It is approximately 3,500 ha in size. Alberta Wildfire is providing support with aircraft and firefighters. Crews are working to establish a containment line along the highway and have had some success in steering the wildfire away from the community.

RCX001 - ELK RIVER COMPLEX: This wildfire includes RWF027, RWF030, RWF034 and RWF040. It is located near the O'Chiese Reserve. Firefighters and helicopters are responding to this complex.

  • RWF027 - 13,100 ha.
  • RWF030 - 0.01 ha.
  • RWF034 - 51,000 ha.
  • RWF040 - 2,200 ha.

RWF031 - is located approximately 17km Southeast of Nordegg and is out of control at approximately 80 ha. Heavy equipment and firefighters are responding to this wildfire.

RWF036 - is located approximately 4 Km north of Highway 11, west of Hornburg. This wildfire is now classified as BEING HELD at approximately 3.5 ha. 

RWF039 - is located south of Alder Flats.  This wildfire is now classified as BEING HELD at 2.5 ha. 

RWF041 - is located by Lodgepole. This wildfire is now classified as BEING HELD at 5.5 ha. 


Lightning through the area has been causing many fire starts. Lightning can cause wildfire, which can smoulder on the ground for a few days before becoming active and visible. This is called a "holdover" fire. Alberta Forestry, parks and tourism follows weather forecasts and also tracks each lightning strike using a tracking system. This allows them to pinpoint where there are areas that have been heavily impacted by lightning. They then send out firefighters to patrol these areas.


PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE UPDATE 

Since January 1, 2023 in the Forest Protection Area, there have been 396 wildfires burning a total of 361,834 ha.
