Active wildfire behaviour

Wildfires from the 2023 season are still burning. While under control or being held, they may see activity in warmer conditions. Remember to call 310-FIRE if you see smoke or fire in the forest. If you are a land-owner with hotspots on your property please have an accurate land location to report and we will respond when conditions allow for successful firefighting. 

Winter burning

Fire permits are no longer required but you are still responsible for any burning project that you take on.

Holdover fires are likely to occur this year due to dry conditions. A fire lit in the winter and left smouldering can burn under the snow and into the ground all winter long. Under the right conditions, these fires can re-emerge in the spring as wildfires. To prevent spring wildfires, check your winter burn sites frequently and ensure that all fires are completely extinguished.

Wait until there are at least 15 cm of snow on the ground before burning or ensure you are building piles on bare mineral soil and follow our safe burning guidelines.

Very dry conditions across the province means the likelihood of an escape burn pile is high. We recommend waiting until there is sufficient snow coverage before doing any winter burning.
