The Sturgeon Lake Fire Department together with Agriculture and Forestry will carry out hazard reduction burning in the community of Sturgeon Lake this afternoon. The objective is to remove fine fuel loading along ditches, open fields, ATV trails and other recreation areas. This spring burning will lessen the risk of man-caused fires that may threaten homes and community infrastructure. Burning is planned to continue for the next two weeks - weather permitting. This project will provide an opportunity for both agencies to work together and cross train; helping to prepare for future wildfire incidents.
Fire permits are required for any type of burning (except campfire). If you live within the Forest Protection Area, please contact your local Forestry office to get a permit (780) 538-5560. Anyone living outside the Forest Protection Area can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
SAFE BURNING PRACTICES
All fires require adequate supervision to ensure a controlled burn. Only burn what you can control and follow the conditions of your permit. Have your fire permit ready to present if requested. Watch for sparks and burning material that may result in smaller spot fires. Large fires can send sparks over several kilometers, especially when burning in the wind. If wind gusts over 15km/hour or increase beyond the limit on your permit, immediately extinguish your fire. Have the tools and equipment listed on your permit avaliable to put out any spot fires that may occur.
