FIRE ADVISORY IN EFFECT: 18:00hrs August 7, 2018
A Fire Advisory has been issued for the Grande Prairie Forest Area, dry conditions and heavy smoke causing low visibility.
No new fire permits will be issued for heavy fuel or non-essential burning. Exiting fire permits are still valid, but no burning is to take place outside of the permit conditions.
This wildfire season the Grande Prairie Forest Area has had 35 wildfires, burning more than 13 hectares. Each of these fire has been extinguished. Only seven of these fires are a result of lightning, all others were human caused and 100 percent preventable. Please do your part to prevent wildfires.
Whenever possible use an existing campfire facility such as stoves, rings and pits for your campfire. These facilities are available in many campgrounds and recreation area and are designed to help contain a fire and prevent it from spreading. If no campfire facilities are available there are some easy steps you can take to help ensure your campfire is safe:
The Forest and Prairie Protection Act include fines up to $287 for abandoning campfires as well as for using fireworks and exploding targets in forested areas. Learn more about updates to the act and fine amounts here.
