The wildfire danger in the Grande Prairie Forest Area is LOW. Check winter burn sites, improperly extinguished fires can holdover and come back to life, especially when it's windy.

Since January 1, 2023, there has been one wildfire in the Grande Prairie Forest Area burning a total of 0.96 hectares.
At this time, wildfire GWF 084 and GWF 085 are carry over fires from the 2022 wildfire season, both are listed as under control. For information on the wildfire situation across the province of Alberta visit Alberta Wildfire status.
During wildfire season, you are required to have a fire permit if you plan on burning in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), with the exception of a campfire. Those living outside the FPA can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
Albertans living or working in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit by contacting your local forestry office or using the new, convenient online Fire Permit Portal.

With the dry conditions last fall and lack of moisture in the ground, there is potential for fires lit this winter to continue to burn under the snow and re-emerge as wildfires in the spring.
To prevent spring holdover wildfires revisit your brush pile or windrow burning projects to ensure the fires are extinguished.
