2024 wildfire season ends
The wildfire season in Alberta has officially ended. Fire permits are no longer required for burning in the Forest Protection Area. While a fire permit is not required, you are still responsible for any fire you ignite outside of the wildfire season. Remember, wildfires can still occur in winter.

Grande Prairie Wildfire Situation
This wildfire season, Grande Prairie Forest Area had 107 wildfires burning nearly 388.79 hectares. All wildfires are now extinguished.
Provincially, Alberta Wildfire has responded to over 1,210 wildfires so far this year, which is slightly above the 5-year average of 1,060 wildfires. Around 707,000 hectares of forest have burned so far this year, slightly more than the 5-year average of 640,000 hectares.

Applications for the 2025 Wildfire Community Preparedness Day are now open as of November 1st.
The Wildfire Community Preparedness Day encourages communities to host events and projects to raise awareness of wildfire risks and improve resilience. The event is developed by the National Fire Protection Association and takes place from May to October.
Communities can apply for a $500 grant to help plan their FireSmart Preparedness Day event. The grant is offered in partnership with the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR), Co-operators, and provincial and territorial wildfire agencies.
