Calgary Forest Area Wildfire Update - June 5, 2023

Warm and dry conditions persist with very little precipitation. The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) is HIGH. Pockets of VERY HIGH to EXTREME wildfire danger are present throughout the area.

DETAILS OF FIRE RESTRICTION

A FIRE RESTRICTION is in effect across much of the Forest Protection Area, including the Calgary Forest Area.

Under this FIRE RESTRICTION:

  • The CFA will not be issuing fire permits

Prohibited:

  • All outdoor wood fires in backcountry and random camping areas on public land
  • Charcoal briquettes in backcountry and random camping areas on public land
  • The use of fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed:

  • Wood campfires on private land and in designated campgrounds
  • Charcoal briquettes on private land and in designated campgrounds
  • Propane/natural gas-powered appliances
  • Open flame oil devices (e.g., turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
  • Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
  • All appliances must be CSA approved and used per manufacturer’s standards

CALGARY FOREST AREA WILDFIRES TO DATE

The CFA has responded to 19 wildfires this season which have burned 4.29 hectares. Although several remain under investigation, the majority were caused by recreational users.


PROVINCIAL STATE OF EMERGENCY

Numerous wildfires continue to burn in many areas of the province. A provincial state of emergency has been declared. Albertans who require assistance can call 310-4455 for wildfire related information. https://www.alberta.ca/emergency.aspx


 

PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE UPDATE (AS OF 10:00 a.m.)

Since January 1, 2023, there have been 582 wildfires recorded in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta that have burned 1,199,122.26 hectares.

There are currently 64 active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area. 18 of the wildfires are classified as out of control, 20 are being held and 26 are under control. For the latest information about wildfires: www.alberta.ca/wildfire-status.
