Calgary Forest Area Wildfire Update - June 9, 2023

The wildfire danger is quite varied across the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) with an overall average of VERY HIGH. Very warm and dry conditions persist in the northern portions of the area and the wildfire danger is now EXTREME.  MODERATE conditions are noted in central portions of the area, and southern portions are now LOW. The forecast is calling for a downtrend across the area with more seasonal temperatures and the potential for showers.

DETAILS OF FIRE RESTRICTION

A FIRE RESTRICTION remains in effect across much of the Forest Protection Area, including the Calgary Forest Area.

Under this FIRE RESTRICTION:

  • The CFA will not be issuing fire permits

Prohibited:

  • All outdoor wood fires in backcountry and random camping areas on public land
  • Charcoal briquettes in backcountry and random camping areas on public land
  • The use of fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed:

  • Wood campfires on private land and in designated campgrounds
  • Charcoal briquettes on private land and in designated campgrounds
  • Propane/natural gas-powered appliances
  • Open flame oil devices (e.g., turkey deep fryers, tiki torches)
  • Indoor wood fires contained within a device with a chimney and spark arrestor
  • All appliances must be CSA approved and used per manufacturer’s standards

CALGARY FOREST AREA WILDFIRES TO DATE

The CFA has responded to 21 wildfires this season which have burned 4.31 hectares. They have all been extinguished.


PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE UPDATE (AS OF 10:00 a.m.)

Since January 1, 2023, there have been 616 wildfires recorded in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta that have burned 1,229,050.73 hectares.

There are currently 71 active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area. 26 of the wildfires are classified as out of control, 15 are being held and 30 are under control. For the latest information about wildfires: www.alberta.ca/wildfire-status.
