The average wildfire danger across the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) remains HIGH. Extreme temperatures are forecast for the coming days. There is some chance of thundershowers associated with this current weather pattern which may provide some precipitation, but will likely be more localized and not widespread across the area.

Fire Advisory 2

FIRE ADVISORY

As of 1 p.m. on July 27, a FIRE ADVISORY is in effect for the Calgary Forest Area.  This is due to the current and anticipated conditions. Under this FIRE ADVISORY:

-No new fire permits will be issued. Existing permits are still valid until the expiry date and all conditions must be followed.

During this FIRE ADVISORY the following are still allowed:

  • Safe wood campfires in designated campgrounds, backyard fire pits and in random camping areas on public land
  • Portable propane fire pits
  • Gas or propane fueled stoves and barbecues
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
  • Charcoal briquettes

Safe wood campfires must be within a metal, brick or rock fire ring. They are required to:

a) be on rock, gravel, sand or other non-combustible surface that extends at least one metre around the fire

b) have a responsible person in attendance to keep the fire under control at all time and extinguish before leaving

c) have on hand enough water to fully extinguish the fire

Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited.

The FIRE ADVISORY will remain in effect until conditions improve or there is a need for further escalation.

LONG WEEKEND REMINDERS

With a FIRE ADVISORY now in effect for the CFA, it is a good reminder to always check albertafirebans.ca to determine whether there are any fire advisories, fire restrictions or fire bans in effect for your destination. Although campfires are still allowed this weekend, please keep it small, safe and ALWAYS attended. When you are leaving your site or headed to bed, your campfire must be fully extinguished. Soak it, stir it, soak it again to ensure it is out.

Off highway vehicles can start wildfires. Please stop often to clean your exhaust to ensure you are not the cause of a wildfire. Stay on approved trails and follow all guidelines.

Please remember that fireworks and exploding targets are PROHIBITED in the Forest Protection Area without the express written permission from a Forest Officer.  The use of these items could earn you a $600 written violation and if you are found responsible for causing a wildfire you could also be held responsible for the costs associated with extinguishing that wildfire.

Patrol staff, Wildland Firefighters and Peace Officers will be visiting sites throughout the Calgary Forest Area this long weekend.

The dashboard builds on the former wildfire status map by displaying the most frequently accessed information in one convenient location.
