Calgary Forest Area Wildfire Update - August 21, 2024

The average wildfire danger across the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) is now HIGH. With scattered precipitation impacting some locations but missing others, there is a mosaic of wildfire danger across the CFA.  Some areas are LOW while areas in the south have climbed to VERY HIGH.


ACTIVE WILDFIRES IN THE CFA

CWF-065 (Burstall Lake Fire) is UNDER CONTROL at 1.2 hectares. It is located in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park approximately 10 km south of the Spray Lakes Reservoir. Please check the Alberta Parks website for current information on impacted trails.

CWF-057 (Fallentimber Fire) is UNDER CONTROL at 48.8 hectares. It is located approximately 25 km west of Water Valley.

CWF-071 was EXTINGUISHED on August 20 at 0.01 hectares. 

Since January 1, the CFA has responded to 71 wildfires which have burned 63.40 hectares.


PROVINCIAL WILDFIRE SUMMARY (as of 10:00 am August 21, 2024)

  • Since January 1, there have been 1,097 wildfires recorded in the Forest Protection Area that have burned 705,766 hectares (ha). 
  • There are currently 83 active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area. Of these wildfires, 5 are classified as out of control, 39 are being held and 39 are under control. 
  • There is one carryover wildfire from the 2023 season.

Although the fire ban in the CFA has been lifted, many neighbouring municipalities have fire advisories, fire restrictions and fire bans remaining in place. Before heading out on your weekend adventures, be sure to check albertafirebans.ca to see if you can have a campfire.
