CURRENT CONDITIONS IN THE CALGARY FOREST AREA

Extreme temperatures and dry conditions have persisted in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) with virtually no precipitation. The conditions in the south of the CFA are of particular concern. If a wildfire ignites, it has the potential to spread extremely quickly. The forecast is calling for more of the same with high temperatures, low relative humidity and no precipitation.

Fire Restriction wide

A FIRE RESTRICTION IS NOW IN EFFECT

As of 10:00 a.m. August 9, a FIRE RESTRICTION is in effect across the entire CFA. Please see albertafirebans.ca for a detailed map of the impacted area.

Under this restriction:

  • Existing fire permits are suspended
  • All outdoor fires presently burning under permit must be extinguished, unless approved to continue by a Forest Officer

Prohibited:

  • Wood campfires on public land -this includes all random camping areas on crown land.

Allowed:

  • Wood campfires within designated campgrounds in an engineered campfire ring
  • Wood campfires and backyard fire pits on private land
  • Charcoal briquette barbeques
  • Propane or natural gas fueled appliances

Visit our wildfire.alberta.ca to see the Ministerial Order authorizing this Fire Restriction and the specific details.

WILDFIRES IN THE CFA

There are currently no active wildfires in the CFA.

Since January 1, the CFA has responded to 122 wildfires which burned a total of 13.17 hectares.

SMOKE CONCERNS

Several municipalities across southern Alberta are being impacted intermittently by smoke and poor air quality. Please be aware that this smoke is not being produced by any active wildfires in Alberta.  FireSmoke.ca is a service that can produce forecasts of hourly ground-level concentrations of smoke from wildfires.

If you have health related smoke concerns, please call Alberta Health Services at 811.

WILDFIRE DASHBOARD

The wildfire dashboard provides up-to-date wildfire information at the click of a button. This interactive tool displays important statistics on the number of active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, sizes, locations, suspected causes and more.

The dashboard builds on the former wildfire status map by displaying the most frequently accessed information in one convenient location.
