The average wildfire danger across the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) remains HIGH. Another band of thundershowers moved through the CFA over the past several days with cooler temperatures. Areas which received the associated precipitation remain at MODERATE to HIGH wildfire danger. The pockets that were missed by the passing storms are now at a VERY HIGH wildfire danger. With hot, dry conditions forecast for next week, the wildfire danger will increase.

Fire Advisory 2

FIRE ADVISORY

The FIRE ADVISORY in the Calgary Forest Area remains in effect.  Under this FIRE ADVISORY:

No new fire permits will be issued.

During this FIRE ADVISORY the following are still allowed:

  • Safe wood campfires in designated campgrounds, backyard fire pits and in random camping areas on public land
  • Portable propane fire pits
  • Gas or propane fueled stoves and barbecues
  • Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
  • Charcoal briquettes

Safe wood campfires must be within a metal, brick or rock fire ring. They are required to:

a) be on rock, gravel, sand or other non-combustible surface that extends at least one metre around the fire

b) have a responsible person in attendance to keep the fire under control at all time and extinguish before leaving

c) have on hand enough water to fully extinguish the fire

Fireworks and exploding targets are PROHIBITED.

The FIRE ADVISORY will remain in effect until conditions improve or there is a need for further escalation. Campfires are currently allowed, but may be restricted in the coming days.

SMOKE CONCERNS

Several municipalities across southern Alberta are being impacted intermittently by smoke and poor air quality. Please be aware that this smoke is not being produced by any active wildfires in Alberta.  FireSmoke.ca is a service that can produce forecasts of hourly ground-level concentrations of smoke from wildfires.

If you have health related smoke concerns, please call Alberta Health Services at 811.

WILDFIRE DASHBOARD

The wildfire dashboard provides up-to-date wildfire information at the click of a button. This interactive tool displays important statistics on the number of active wildfires in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, sizes, locations, suspected causes and more.

The dashboard builds on the former wildfire status map by displaying the most frequently accessed information in one convenient location.
