End of wildfire season

WILDFIRE SEASON OFFICIALLY OVER

As of November 1, the 2022 wildfire season is officially over and fire permits are no longer required in the Calgary Forest Area. If you plan on doing burning over the winter months, you are still responsible for the safe execution, maintenance and extinguishment of your burning projects. Please monitor weather conditions closely and ensure you have sufficient firefighting equipment on hand.

WILDFIRES IN THE CFA

Heading into the off season, there are two active wildfires in the CFA.

ANP-OO7 (Dormer Wildfire) is now classified as BEING HELD and is estimated at 669 hectares. A BEING HELD status means that the wildfire is not expected to grow beyond pre-determined boundaries given current resources and forecast weather. Alberta Wildfire is working in conjunction with Parks Canada to control this wildfire.

CWF-167 is classified as UNDER CONTROL at 2 hectares and was caused by lightning. Crews will patrol this wildfire to ensure no hot spots remain.

CAMPFIRES IN THE FALL

Throughout the fall, the CFA tends to see abandoned campfires remain a leading cause of wildfires.  With an abundance of dry fuel, it is extremely important to never leave a campfire unattended and to ensure it is completely extinguished before you retire for the night or leave your day site or campsite.  Abandoned campfires remain a major concern for us at this time of year.
