ACTIVE WILDFIRE IN MD OF RANCHLAND

Wildfire CWF-170 is currently classified as UNDER CONTROL. It is located on the west side of Highway 22, about 2 km south of Highway 533 and approximately 2.5 km southwest of Chain Lakes Provincial Park. It is currently mapped at 37 hectares, down from an earlier estimate of 100 hectares. The size was adjusted after wildland firefighters were able to fly over the site Wednesday morning.

The wildfire was detected Tuesday night, around 11:30 p.m. and was initially actioned by firefighters from the MD of Willow Creek’s contracted fire departments. The area experienced extremely strong winds overnight which made controlling this wildfire difficult, particularly in night time conditions.

According to Alberta Emergency Alert, a critical alert was issued to the residents in the area but it has since been downgraded to an information alert. For any and all information related to the evacuation alert, please contact the MD of Ranchland Administration Office at (403) 646-3131.

At this time, there is no direct threat to residences or other infrastructure.

CURRENT CONDITIONS NEAR ACTIVE WILDFIRES

Windy conditions are expected to continue today. Winds are blowing from the southwest at 50 to 60 km/h with gusts up to 100 km/h. The temperature will be around 10 to 12 degrees, with a chance of a showers tonight.
We see more wildfires when we have warm weather, high winds and extremely dry fuels like grass and dead vegetation. When the conditions are right for a wildfire, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is. Winter wildfires are not unusual in Alberta.

HAVE A SAFE WINTER

Updates will only be posted and distributed over the winter months if warranted. The 2022 wildfire season will begin March 1, 2022 and you can expect regular updates to resume then.
