The overall wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area (CFA) remains LOW, with some pockets of moderate to high. Ample snow remains in the mountains and into the foothills, however many open areas are now snow-free. Fuels in these areas can ignite easily and burn quickly. As more areas are exposed with warmer temperatures and without precipitation, we can anticipate an increase in the wildfire danger.
A FIRE RESTRICTION is in effect for the extreme northern portions of the CFA in the Panther region. This fire restriction impacts areas within the CFA that are south of the Red Deer River, but within the boundaries of Clearwater County. For a precise map of the area impacted and more details, please visit albertafirebans.ca.
Under this FIRE RESTRICTION:
Prohibited
- wood campfires in random camping areas
- fireworks and exploding targets
Allowed:
- wood campfires in engineered rings in designated campgrounds or on private land
- charcoal briquettes
- propane and natural gas fueled appliances (stoves, lanterns, fire rings)
- open flame oil devices
- indoor wood fires
The FIRE ADVISORY remains in effect for the portion of the CFA that are NOT under a Fire Restriction.
Under this advisory:
- existing fire permits remain valid, however extension requests may not be granted
- new permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, for essential burning only
- campfires are allowed in both designated campgrounds and random camping areas
- fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited
Landowners who have done any burning over the winter and/or previous permit holders are encouraged to revisit the burn locations to ensure these fires are fully extinguished.
This advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve or further escalation is required.

2024 WILDFIRE SEASON IN THE CFA
The CFA is ready to respond to the 2024 wildfire season. Our wildland firefighters were able to gather together last week to plan for the upcoming season. Some of the highlights included: wildfire scenarios, reviewing safety protocols, practicing hover exits from a helicopter, chainsaw training and field operations.
With the wildfire danger remaining relatively low, the CFA was able to export 12 wildland firefighters to assist on active wildfires burning in central and northern Alberta.
WILDFIRES IN THE CFA
Since January 1, the CFA has responded to five wildfires which burned a total of 0.92 hectares. They have all been extinguished.
CWF-005 was assessed on April 23 and is now extinguished at 0.26 hectares. The cause is under investigation.
