Whitecourt Forest Area Wildfire Update

WILDFIRE DANGER

The wildfire danger is very high in the Whitecourt Forest Area, except areas east of Highway 32, where the wildfire danger is extreme. Dry, hot weather continues to dry the forest, causing the wildfire danger to increase.

Today, there will be crossover conditions because the temperature will be a maximum of 29 C and the relative humidity will be 20 per cent. Under these conditions, a fire will ignite easily and spread quickly, becoming a hard to control wildfire.

Lightning season is now here, if you see smoke in the forest call 310-FIRE (3473).

FIRE ADVISORY

A fire advisory issued on May 14, 2018 remains in place for the Whitecourt Forest Area. The advisory is due to persistent dry weather, and the dry grass wildfire hazard. Dry grass provides fuel for fast moving wildfires.

Not permitted

Any burning (except campfires) within the Whitecourt Forest Area.
All fire permits (except burn barrels) are now suspended.

Permitted

Safe wood campfires in campgrounds (within fire rings) or random camping areas
Charcoal briquettes
Portable propane fire pits
Catalytic or infrared-style heaters
Permitted burn barrels.

WILDFIRE SITUATION | May 23, 2018, at 10:30 a.m.

Whitecourt Forest Area

In the last 24 hours, there was 1 new wildfire in the Whitecourt Forest Area, it was quickly extinguished by firefighters. There is one wildfire in the area:
- Wildfire 19 is located just over 16 kilometres southeast of the Town of Fox Creek, and is currently under control at 0.31 hectares in size. No structures or communities are at risk. Firefighters are returning to the site today, looking for hotspots as they work on extinguishing the wildfire.
Since March 1, 2018, there have been 20 wildfires; with a total area burnt of 10.43 hectares.
