Slave Lake Area Update

Wildfire hazard is HIGH. Three new wildfires this afternoon.

Airtankers have made good progress on slowing the spread of three new wildfires that were spotted this afternoon.

SWF 181 (Slave Lake Wildfire number 181) is located south of highway 686 on the way to Peerless Lake. The wildfire is being held and is estimated to be five hectare in size. Dozers are en route and will build guard around the wildfire tonight. There are 18 firefighters assigned to this wildfire. 

SWF 180 (Slave Lake Wildfire number 180) located east of Vandersteene Lake is being held at 0.01 hectares.

SWF 179 (Slave Lake Wildfire number 179)  located south of Blanchet Lake is 10 hectares and is classified as out of control. This evening airtankers have been successful in slowing the spread. There are 22 firefighters assigned to this wildfire.

Since April 1st there have been 181 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2245 hectares.

Wildfire Hazard

Warm weather and lack of rain has caused the wildfire hazard to climb to HIGH for the Slave Lake Forest Area. Click here to view the wildfire hazard map. Use caution as conditions are dry and report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE.

 

Weather Forecast
For Tuesday the forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid twenties, winds from the north/northwest up to 20 kilometres per hour and a chance of isolated thundershowers.
An artic cold front is slowly moving into the boreal and widespread showers are forecasted for mid week.

Fire Permits
 
Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. 

Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.

Campfires do not require a fire permit.

By getting a fire permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of investigating the smoke in your backyard.

Do your part to prevent wildfires this summer
 
Check your off-highway vehicle frequently for any smoldering debris. Grass, muskeg, moss or other debris can drop to the ground as you're riding and spark a wildfire.This video shows you how to ride debris free! 
 
Never leave your campfire unattended and make sure it's out. A campfire left smouldering can cause a wildfire.This video shows you how to make sure your campfire is out.

Incendiary shooting targets have been banned across the province.These targets explode when shot with a firearm and have been known to cause wildfires.

To prevent wildfires when using farm equipment ensure your machine is clear of flammable crop residue, check for sparks frequently and carry firefighting equipment on board.
