This evening lightning has sparked eight new wildfires around the Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park. Warm weather and lack of rain has caused the wildfire hazard to climbed to VERY HIGH for areas north of Lesser Slave Lake. Areas around and south of Lesser Slave Lake are at HIGH. Click here to view the wildfire hazard map.
Use caution when working or recreating in the forest as a wildfire will ignite easily and spread quickly under windy conditions. Report wildfires immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3473).

High Alert
We are expecting a good chance of lightning again tomorrow afternoon. Firefighters with helicopters and airtankers will be stationed throughout the area ready to fight any new wildfires that may start. We also have our personnel in the fire towers on high alert constantly watching for smoke.
Weather Forecast
For Wednesday, the forecast is calling for temperatures in the mid twenties, winds from the southeast 20 kilometres per hour and a good chance of isolated thundershowers with lightning in the afternoon.
Wildfire Situation for the Slave Lake Forest Area
Lightning has sparked four new wildfires this afternoon. Three have been extinguished and one is classified as out of control.
Airtankers and helicopters have made good progress on slowing the spread of the wildfire located east of Wood Buffalo Lake. The wildfire is classified as burning out of control and is estimated to be 70 hectares in size. As of 7:30 pm this evening firefighters have reported that the wildfire behavior has been significantly reduced.There are 45 firefighters and six helicopters assigned to this wildfire.
Since April 1st there have been 153 wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area and the total area burned is just over 2209 hectares.

Fire Permits - Fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. Campfires do not require a fire permit.
Fire permits are free and can be obtained by calling your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office.
