Prescribed fire operations in the Blackstone and Wapiabi areas, northwest of Nordegg, saw approximately 100 hectares burned yesterday. Operations will recommence when conditions are favorable. The area closure has been lifted for the area.
The objective is to improve ungulate habitat by reducing shrub encroachment and reinvigorating grass growth as well as creating a landscape level fire break. We will proceed when and where we can ensure a safe operation that will meet the overall objectives of the prescribed fire.
Prescribed fire supports FireSmart principles that reduce wildfire threat to Albertans and their communities by reducing the likelihood of large uncontrollable wildfires while creating a healthier forest. Click to learn about the importance of wildfire.
