High Level Area Update

Please remember during fire season (March 1st - October 31st) you need to obtain a fire permit for any debris burning. Adhere to the conditions of your burn permit, never burn in windy conditions and always extinguish your campfire. If you see smoke or flame, call 310-FIRE.

HIGH LEVEL FOREST AREA | WILDFIRE SITUATION | MAY 27, 2022

Since January 1st, 2022 in the High Level Forest Area (HLFA), there have been 11 wildfires burning a total of 1.55 hectares.

Since January 1st, 2022 in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, there have been 324 wildfires which burned a total of 486 hectares.

BURN IT WITH A PERMIT

From March 1st to October 31st, a fire permit is required for any type of outdoor burning in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta with the exception of a campfire for cooking or warming. Fire permits help ensure that when smoke or fire is reported, wildfire officials can determine whether this is a wildfire or a permitted burn.

Albertans living or recreating in the Forest Protection Area of the province can request a free fire permit using the new, convenient online fire permit portal.

Fire permits can still be requested over the phone by calling the High Level Forest Area permit line at 780-926-5407.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY

We urge everyone to use caution when working and recreating outdoors. Never leave your campfire unattended.

Soak it, stir it, soak it again.

• Let the fire burn down before you plan on putting it out. Spread the embers within the fire pit, then add water or loose dirt, and stir.

• Expose any material still burning. Add more water and stir again until you can no longer see smoke or steam. Do not bury your fire as the embers may continue to smoulder and can re-emerge as a wildfire.

• Repeat until your campfire is cool to the touch.

• If your fire is out, you should not be able to feel any heat from the ashes.
