The wildfire hazard for the Grande Prairie region is now MODERATE. Dry, windy conditions are in the forecast for the next couple of days. Grassy areas will become an extreme wildfire danger as they continue to dry. Exercise caution if you are burning or using off-highway vehicles in areas of dried grass as fire can spread quickly and become hard to control.
The Sturgeon Lake Fire Department together with Agriculture and Forestry will continue to carry out hazard reduction burning in the community of Sturgeon Lake this weekend and into next week. The objective is to remove fine fuel loading along ditches, open fields, ATV trails and other recreation areas. This spring burning will lessen the risk of man-caused fires that may threaten homes and community infrastructure. This project will provide an opportunity for both agencies to work together and cross train; helping to prepare for future wildfire incidents.
Burning is not permitted during windy conditions. Remember you must evaluate the weather at your specific location. Get a permit and follow the conditions. You can be held responsible if a fire escapes the burn permit area. If you live within the Forest Protection Area, please contact your local Forestry office to get a permit (780) 538-5560. Anyone living outside the Forest Protection Area can contact their municipality for information about local fire permit requirements.
If you have burned on your land recently it’s a good idea to check the area. Spread out remaining ash and unburnt fuel and probe the area for hot spots. Using your hand, feel for heat over the ash pile. If you see smoke or feel heat, the fire is still burning beneath the surface. Drench any remaining hot spots with water and stir up the ashes.
