gfx-hsb-wildfiredangerupdate-moderate.jpgThe Sturgeon Lake Fire Department together with Agriculture and Forestry are making good progress with the hazard reduction burning in the community of Sturgeon Lake. To date 36 hectares have been burned. The objective is to remove fine fuel loading along ditches, properties, ATV trails and other recreation areas.  Burning is planned to continue as long as weather and resources allow. This project is providing an opportunity for both agencies to work together and cross train; helping to prepare for future wildfire incidents.

BEFORE YOU BURN IT, GET YOUR PERMIT

  • Fire permits are free and you can get more information or request a fire permit by calling our Grande Prairie Fire Center office at 780-538-5560.
  • Please call our office in advance of when you would like to burn in order to give our staff time to make arrangements to come out to your site and issue your permit.
  • In order to further ease the process, please have your site ready according to the burning site guidelines before staff arrive.
  • Remember that you must evaluate the weather at your specific location and follow the conditions stated on your permit. You can be held responsible if a fire escapes the burn permit area.
  • All permits must be completely extinguished before they expire.

A campfire can burn deep into the ground and flare up again in dry or windy weather. Soak the ashes and stir them. Keep soaking the ashes until they are cool to the touch. Even if you are going for a short hike, make sure your campfire is out. Learn more here.
