The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area remains MODERATE

Last year, 88% of wildfires were human caused. Do your part to prevent human-caused wildfires. As hunters head out into forested areas this fall it is important to remember when riding your off-highway vehicle, stop frequently to clear debris from your machine’s hotspots. Left unchecked debris can build up and begin to burn slowly with no flame. This smouldering debris will start to smoke and fall to the ground, potentially igniting a wildfire as you ride away.

Wildfire Situation

Since March 1, 2021 there have been 100 wildfires burning nearly 132 ha in the Grande Prairie Forest Area. Provincially in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta, there have been 1,254 wildfires, burning a total of 52,897.92 ha. Fire Permits

Before you burn it, get a fire permit. Until October 31st, fire permits are required for any type of burning in the Forest Protection Area. The only exception is for a cooking or warming campfire. Fire permits help us to track what is burning on the landscape. If you're burning without a fire permit or outside fire permit conditions, your fire is considered a wildfire. By getting a fire permit you help keep our firefighters free to fight real wildfires instead of responding to the smoke in your backyard. Call your local Alberta Agriculture and Forestry office to request your free fire permit.
