October 31 marks the end of the wildfire season in Alberta and while the hazard is low it does not mean the risk of wildfire is eliminated. The best time to burn is during the winter when our forest is protected from fire with a blanket of snow. Burning outside of the fire season, especially when snow is on the ground, greatly reduces the chance of a wildfire spreading. This winter remember to visit your burned sites and check for heat. If you see smoke or feel heat the fire is still burning. Permits are no longer required to burn within the Forest Protection Area of AlbertaYou can help us over the winter: If you have concerns with a burn you are completing or you would like to report a winter burn location, please give us a call at the Grande Prairie forestry office (780) 538-5560
